Sunflower Crafts

Sunflowers in a pot Cheerful yellow sunflowers, accented with lemon leaves and pale yarrow, are the basis of these charming decorating accents. The whimsical hat, hung on a door or wall, adds the perfect country touch to a room; the coffeepot arrangement lets you carry the sunflower theme throughout the house.

You will need:

For the hat:

1 5" diameter wide-brim straw hat
11 lemon leaves
3 stems dried miniature sunflowers, 3" - 4" inches long
8 bunches chiffon colored yarrow, 3" - 4" long
1 yd of 2" wide ombre French ribbon

For coffeepot arrangement:

4 1/2" x 3 1/2" floral foam for dried flowers
7" tall enamel coffeepot or other country style container
14 stems lemon leaves, 9" to 14" long
6 stems dried miniature sunflowers, 10" to 15" long
8 bunches chiffon colored yarrow, 9" to 15" long
Spanish moss (optional)

Tools needed:

glue gun
tape measure or ruler
scissors

What you do

Making the hat:

Turn up the hat brim on one side and glue to the crown to form the back of the hat (photo). Glue lemon leaves along the base of the crown at the front and sides of the hat, overlapping the leaves.

Tuck the stems of the sunflowers behind the lemon leaves and glue the sunflowers in place. Glue yarrow on top of the lemon leaves, filling in spaces between the sunflowers and covering the sunflower stems.

Using the French ribbon, make a 2-loop bow with 9"-long tails. Glue the bow to the back of the hat at the edge of the turned-up brim. Cut the bow tails in a V shape.

Making the coffee pot arrangement:

Glue the floral foam to the inside bottom of your container. Insert varying lengths of lemon leaves into the foam and secure: Place short pieces at the front of the arrangement and long pieces at the back and sides.

Referring to the photo, insert the sunflowers to create an arrangement that is balanced yet rustic looking. Place one short sunflower toward the front center of the arrangement; glue to the floral foam. Place tall sunflowers toward the back and sides of the arrangement.

Insert yarrow throughout to fill spaces and to balance the arrangement; glue to secure. If desired, flue a small amount of Spanish moss around the rim of the container.
