Victorian Door Posy

door posy Click here for a larger view
Here's a charming door bouquet that appears to be lighter than air and is made in a weekend, with time to spare. The lacy vase is a crocheted doily that's stiffened and shaped to form a pocket. The pocket holds a block of floral foam into which dried and silk flowers are arranged for an enchanting display.

You will need

14" x 14" scalloped lace doily
8 oz bottle liquid fabric stiffener
soft drink can
2" x 3" x 1 1/2" block of floral foam for dried flowers
Clump of dried Spanish moss
2 large stems dried caspia
6 small cluster dried mauve starflowers, wired onto floral picks
6 clusters small pink silk flowers
8 small stems dried purple statice

15 stems dried blue lavendar
4 stems dried pink rosebuds
1 small bunch dried baby's breath, separated into stems
1 1/3 yard 1/8"-wide mauve satin ribbon
floral pick
6" floral wire
floral tape
plastic bag and twister; waxed paper or aluminum foil; paper towel; scissors; white crafter's glue or glue gun

If you make this project we'd love to see it! Just send your photos and comments to the editor and it may get published on this page!

What you do

1. Place doily and about 2 oz of fabric stiffener into plastic bag; close bag with twister. With fingers, knead stiffener into doily. When doily is saturated with stiffener, remove doily from bag. Spread doily flat on waxed paper or aluminum foil. Blot with paper towel to remove excess stiffener.

2. Place the soft-drink can in center of doily. Bring bottom of doily up over can. Fold left side of doily over can. Fold right side of doily over can. With fingers, loosely shape doily at sides and bottom of pocket (photo). Let doily dry about 3 hours before removing can. (Note: If can is removed too soon, doily may not retain its pocket shape; if doily dries too much, can may be difficult to remove.) After removing can, let doily dry completely, about 8 hours or overnight.

3. Insert floral foam into pocket and cover foam with Spanish moss. Using photo as a guide, arrange dried flowers in floral foam in order given in materials list, poking ends of flower stems and floral picks into floral foam.

4. Cut 30" piece of ribbon; make a four-loop bow with 8" tails. Glue bases of loops to center of remaining 18" piece of ribbon. (Note: Bow now has four tails.) Attach bow to floral pick with floral wire; wrap wire and pick with floral tape. Add ribbon pick to floral arrangement; trim ends of ribbon to desired length (photo).
