new thread on skin care question

There wasn't much activity on the skin care board, so I am taking the chance on starting anew, hopefully to get some information on my topic of concern.

After a little bit of research and professional consultation(vet) I have come to understand that certain strains of mange-which is typically an animal problem-can be transmitted to humans.

Are there any readers here who have any information, links(and especially pictures of what mange looks like on people) on this? I am hoping to do enough information gathering to produce a referral for me to see a dermatologist.

Thanks,
ctmom05@yahoo.com

mange

You might want to try tree tea oil on said problems -- both on you and on your animals.

Pinkie Winky Mange

From what a vet. told me when he treated a fullblood collie we purchased is that the RED Mange is where an animals body doesn't f have the ability to fight the mites off. It was not catching.

Regular mange is catching. I don't know what it looks like in humans.

Hi ya,

Got this information from at site, that Google highlighted. I only *copied* the information that was pertinent to the issue here. Please, the following information came from a web site, that was talking about wild animals, like foxes, wolves, cottontail rabbits and etc.

Sarcoptic mange mites are known to transfer from animal hosts to people, so persons handling mangy animals should take reasonable precautions: wear rubber gloves if possible, and always wash promptly after handling a diseased animal.

Notoedric mites are not transmissible to humans.

Sarcoptes scabiei...that is the scientific word for Sarcoptes mange...but, it is the scabiei part that got me to thinking. I bet, if you simply call your Dermatologist, and tell them you think, you just might have Scabies...they will want you in and examine you. Scabies is a microscopic mite and is highly contagious. Been there...done that. I just have a *gut feeling* that the Sarcoptes mange, is so much like Scabies, that they may even be the *same* mite.

Check this out, for some pictures.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/health/sex/stis_scabies.shtml

The above URL is about Scabies, while there you can click on a link to view a picture of a man's arm, with scabies. This site, also, goes into full details about this disease.

Now, please, do NOT be offended, since this site is mainly talking about *sexually transmitted infections*, this can be a SDI...but, usually it is not and they point that out, in the article, ok?

several weeks later.....

Thanks for your input everyone. I confered with my family practitioner and the vet. Bteween the two of them, they thought my problem was poison ivy. if it was, it was not like any I had ever had before!

This problem was rashy on my arms and legs, but not all over either...blistery on a few fingers and my eyes were extremely red-ringed and then they looked dark and dry.

I took a round of prednisone, which helped with the swelling of my face. The itchy eyes went on for weeks and then finally it all started to fade. I would say I look and feel pretty normal now.

Interestingly a neighbor mentioned a condition that had run thru her family, very similar characteristics. She said that she was told it is a virus, of unknown name, that just has to run its course and they get it every single summer.

I appreciate the concern and support-thanks , I am feeling a lot better.

Most commonly people who get the mange mites are said to have Scabies. It is a raised bump that itches very badly.
It is usually treated by a topical application.
For the most part mange is specaies spefic and won't live on another host for long. Probably longer than you'd like though.
I worked with animals for years and never had a problem.
Then after leaving the animal field I had my daughter and got a case of scabies. I had to have picked it up from the doctors office becasue that's the only place I'd been.
I could not use the prescriptions becasue I was breast feeding..
I had to wait it out and I was miserable for several days.
When I went to the doctor he said he realized it was embarrassing but that it had nothing to do with cleanliness etc. He said he himself had had it twice.
Hope you find some answers soon.
Take care,
Robin in NC

Hi:
We got a puppy from the animal shelter. He had mange and it was transmitted to each of us in the family, 4 people. The vet said to just put the same salve on us that he gave us for the dog. The irritation on us was on our stomach, where we sat him in our laps. It was red, blotchy, and itchy. It cleared up in a few days for the dog and for all of us. That was in 1976.

Hi Shine:
I'd call your physician. Any medication can have a reaction like you describe. If he/she rules out the bc pills, I'd look to a food allergy.
