Wendy - I put the receipt from grocery shopping in the same place in my pocketbook all the time. When I get home, I put the info in the Word Pad, put a check mark on the receipt, and the other info at the top of the receipt so it is easy to see, how much it was retail, how much I paid and date. Of course I live alone, so that makes a difference as no one is wanting me to do things for them.

Find out what works for you. Finding the time to get organized it the hardest part. It takes me a few days sometimes to get system logged. I work fulltime, teach one a class and have two kids and a husband all going into different directions.

Now, that they have learned my system of keeping track, of the foods items in the pantry, fridge/freezer they now put it on the shopping list. Just keep at it and see what works for you. I have my menu plan for the week, posted on my fridge and also my pantry list. As I cross something off, I add it to my shopping list.
