Flag Cake

I am in search of an inexpensive recipe for a flag cake. My son will be 2 on the 3rd and we are celebrating with a total of 18 family members on the 4th. I checked out this website for information, but didn't find anything that I really wanted.

I found that I can get 24 cupcakes(red, white and blue)at our local grocery store for $10...and those are more what I'm looking for. Any suggestions? I don't want something that's gonnas take me a long time to prepare and I want it to look nice...so if it takes artistic skills, I'm not interested. LOLOL!!

I received this in an email today. I dont think that I would bother making a homemade cake though. You can usually find a box cake mix on sale and I would use regular icing instead of the Cool Whip.

At least this gives you an idea.

To me, I think $10. for 24 cupcakes is rather expensive. You could make them yourself a lot cheaper.

Do a search for "flag cakes" on Google and see what you come up with.

Check out the Holiday section of ideas right here on this site. Go to the top of this page and click on holidays then look for July 4th. There are some really cute ideas there...especially the section for childrens recipes.

Womansday.com has an Uncle Sam cake on there that is really cute too !

Do you want a flag or will red, white & blue do? If it will, try a Jello poke cake.

Bake a regular white cake in 2 layers, let it cool 15 minutes in the pan. Poke the cake with a fork (a lot!) Dissolve a small box of red and blue jello separately with 1 cup boiling water each. Pour over the cake layers (one per layer). Chill a few hours.

Unmold one layer (its tricky), frost the top with 1 cup cool whip. Unmold the other layer on top, frost with the remaining cool whip carton (8 oz or 12 oz)

This is an older recipe...but simple (allow the needed time) and it seems to go over well!

I make this with the reduced fat cake mixes, sugar free jello, and fat free cool ship...every little bit helps!;-)
