Decorative boards around trees

I recently read somewhere online that it wasn't good for your trees if you build a wood encasement around the base of trees, such as a bench or flower border. I believe it said something about rotting the roots or causing mold. I'd really like to know more about this if anyone can help me. We just got 10 cedar decorative boards for free but don't want to hurt my tree that was just planted last spring.
Thank you.

I haven't heard that about benches.

I have mulch around most of my trees with rocks around the edges and flowers planted inside.

All I've heard is that the mulch shouldn't be up to the base of tree, that there should be space for air flow and water.

I think if you use untreated wood there wont be a problem. A lot of people use old railroad ties which are soaked in chemicals, a lot of times you can get them free. which makes them popular but the cemicals will kill your tree and plants or grass. Good Luck.
