Kind of an obvious thing, but when you get your item weighed, make sure its in the packing box you will be sending it in, along with packing material. All that will add up shipping costs.

Take a good picture and ooooh I hate it when listings are all in caps I feel like the seller is yelling at me + its harder to read.

ebay selling

you can got to USPS online & find out what the mailing rates are. If you print your label at home you get free tracking. you can pay online but you do not have to, you can just print the label with out paying then pay at the post office. they just recently came out with flat rate boxes. you get them free at the post office or you can order them online and they will send you some. but the flat rate boxes have one fee which does not change no matter how heavy the box is.

Question

I too would like to learn to sell on ebay. I'm wondering about postage, and learning how to package items properly for shipping.

Also, about income tax or do you have to sell a certain amount?

Thanks for any input!

I'd very much like to revive this thread. I have been selling on eBay, on and off, for almost 8 years. I go in spurts, sometimes not selling anything for 6-8 months.

I'd like to get more regular with it. Right now I have several things up for sale, but I'd really like to discuss how to maximize what eBay offers, without spending all my profit in fees.

Anyone else out there selling?

I get really frustrated because it costs so much to ship things that you almost can't sell stuff unless it's brand new or rare. I have 22 items up for sale right now, all of them end within the next 24 hours. Only 9 of these items have any bids on them right now. The other 13 have a few watchers, but otherwise no bites. I know that sometimes people wait until the last minute, but I really think the shipping has a lot to do with it. People are looking for a bargain, but when they see the cost of shipping it turns them off.

I have a small post office scale somewhere and need to dig it out again. I used to weigh everything and plug that information in, that way people could choose parcel post or priority themselves.

I think I need to pull that out and revisit that method.

The scale was actually quite reasonable. I think I paid right around $30 for it and it's approved by the post office. It plugs in and works off batteries. It's not very big though, so it's not ideal for huge packages. It works great for small boxes, priority boxes, etc, but nothing huge. You CAN weigh big boxes on it, but I wouldn't count on it being incredibly accurate, but at least it gives you a ball park number.

Have you found that having your listings end on any certain days of the week is better?
