Craft Supplies

  School Box Craft Project
by Susie Tilton

Storage. It is the new designer accessory, something to store everything. I love to reuse old containers for storage. Like the tall cylindrical potato chip can that holds my paint brushes, or the mini drawers I bought at the hardware store for nuts and bolts that holds all my beads. A few years back we were on a cruise and the ship had a cigar shop. It was a pretty interesting place to poke around one rainy day and I was awed by the cigar boxes. The gentleman working there offered me as many as I wanted. Most of what I stuffed in my suitcase that vacation were basic wood cigar boxes just begging for a little paint, glue, beads whatever. But they went to work as storage long before I ever embellished them.

I guess my favorite is the one in my sewing room. It hold an assortment of needles, a jar to hold broken needles and bent pins, a few tools, that sort of stuff. I decided to decoupage the outside of the box with all sorts of advertisements, pictures and words I clipped out of years of sewing magazines. It all happened in a cleaning frenzy when I decided to not keep all these old back issues, after all isn't that why we love the internet? But I couldn't resist one last thumb through and started clipping websites I should look at and the pile grew with cute ads, funny words and pictures of all things sewing. A bottle of clear drying glue and I was in business.

If you make this project we'd love to see it! Just send your photos and comments to the editor and it may get published on our Facebook fan page!

I do a bedroom clean out every summer, and as I organized my son's desk, I thought about one of those cigar boxes for artist pencils and markers. Gum eraser, sharpeners, things that you don't want stuck in a jar with all the regular supplies. I decided to do a little decoupage on the cigar box using things I cut out of old text books. I spent an hour or so cutting out colorful pictures, problems, phrases, anything that was interesting. The cigar box I chose had been previously painted, but no one ever finished the project, perfect! I also cut out different letters for his name.

You need a glue that will dry clear and a good paintbrush (they're right there in that potato chip can!) Thin the glue a little with water and brush one side of the box lightly. Start with the biggest items first and then add smaller pictures and phrases to fill in the gaps. Brush over all the pictures with another thin coat of watered down glue. And let it dry thoroughly. Do not fret over the wrinkles, they will dry smooth, miraculously! Voila! Cute storage, great for a kid to do on their own, no right or wrong way! And the best part is that more stuff finds a home!
