Salt Dough Dog Bone Magnet
Designed by Amanda Formaro

click here for a larger view
Make this cute dog bone manget to hang on your fridge. Use it to display a photo, hang reminders about the vet and the dog groomer, or anything else you can think of. A great way to recognize the canine member of your family.

You will need

1 cup salt
2 cups all purpose flour
1 cup water
acrylic paints (tan, white, black)
paintbrush
toothpick
old toothbrush
black Sharpie marker
clear acrylic sealer
magnet strip or circle
white craft glue

IMPORTANT NOTE: This recipe for salt dough makes a lot of ornaments. If you only plan on making a few, cut this recipe into fourths or in half.

If you make this project we'd love to see it! Just send your photos and comments to the editor and it may get published on this page!

What you do

Preheat oven to 250 F. Mix together, salt, flour, and water until a dough is formed. Knead the dough on a floured surface until the mixture is elastic and smooth. If dough is too sticky, sprinkle with flour, continue to do so until stickiness is gone. BE CAREFUL. Do not add too much flour, this will dry out the dough and will cause it to crack before you get a chance to bake it.

THIS DOUGH IS NOT EDIBLE.

Roll out the dough. To make the bone, you can either use a bone shaped cookie cutter or have a grown use a paring knife to cut out the shape by hand.

Use a toothpick to write your dog's name across the bone.

Place the bone onto the cookie sheet and bake for approximately 2 hours. Remove from oven and allow to cool completely. For best results, allow bone to cool and dry overnight, or for at least 4 hours.

To decorate, paint the bone with tan acrylic paint. Let dry. Use the toothbrush method on the bone.

Toothbrush Method:
Put a small amount of black paint onto a paper plate, about the size of a dime. Add a few drop of water, enough to thin the paint. Using an old toothbrush, pick up some of the thinned black paint. Before applying this method to the box, test it on a piece of newspaper. Flick the bristles of the toothbrush by dragging your finger or thumb across them. This causes the paint to spray off the brush onto your "target", in this case, the newspaper. Once you are happy with the result, flick the paint all over the bone. Repeat this process with white paint as well.

Use the black Sharpie marker to write over the name. The marker will most likely not fit in the grooves, as with ours. That's ok! Writing over the lines gives an outlined affect.

Spray entire surface with acrylic sealer and allow to dry completely.

When sealer is dry, glue a magnet to the back and hang proudly on your refrigerator!
