When they come home each afternoon have healthier snacks waiting so that they don't grab for potato chips or cookies. Our members shared their ideas for fun and tasty snacks that are much better than the prepackaged ones that are so easy to grab. A little forethought will get them eating better and they'll thank you for it.
  • 5 Exercises Kids Should Never Do - Fitness isn't just a fad; it's a way of life. Sooner or later, your kids will want to make it a part of their lives, too -- if they're not too turned off by their gym classes, that is -- and you should encourage them be as active as possible. However, not all exercise is good exercise when it comes to kids.
  • A Chronically Stuffy Nose May be a Sign of Allergies - When my daughter gets a common cold, she also gets a stuffy nose that seems to lasts for a long time. It usually turns into a sinus infection or something requiring antibiotics. Isn't there something that she can take that will curb the stuffiness and help clear things up?
  • ADHD and Sleep - Children with ADHD are more likely to have sleep difficulties. However, good sleep hygiene in conjunction with self-soothing relaxation techniques may help to solve your child's sleep problems.
  • Adolescent Angst - On top of the general surge of hormones, young people are prone to experience depression. Stuck at the crossroads of adulthood, adolescents customarily feel low on the totem pole of life when they're under a lot of stress and duress.
  • Allergy-Fighting Foods - If your child suffers from allergies, no doubt you've heard the advice to avoid allergens from many sources. What you may not have heard is that there is another way to minimize or eliminate allergy symptoms without resorting to drugs, expensive treatments or even alternative medicine.
  • Are My Kids Underweight? - My children dance and do karate and the instructor noticed my kids looked underweight compared to other kids. She suggested I add more fat to their diet. Should I? Their doctor has never said anything about it. I'm not sure what to do.
  • Are You Raising Fit or Fat Kids? - There is an epidemic of overweight kids - and you don't have to read the newspaper or watch the news to find that out. Just take a look at kids at the mall or in the schoolyard. You can also see a shortage of kids outside playing, biking or running. What can parents do to make sure their kids are not part of the statistics?
  • Avoid Mealtime Battles - And Still Get Your Kids To Eat - From that very first meal, we parents are obsessed with the quantity, variety and quality of the food our children eat, or don't eat. The best things we can do for our children are to serve nutritious meals and snacks and model healthy eating habits. Beyond that, bite your tongue, look the other way and try to RELAX.
  • Baby Bites: A Smile That Lasts A Lifetime - Children's teeth require special care... Oral hygiene habits developed in early childhood will last a lifetime affecting more than just a healthy smile. Studies show that children with healthy mouths.
  • Baby Bottle Tooth Decay - Baby bottle tooth decay (BBTD) is a serious dental condition that strikes children between the ages of one and four. BBTD is caused by prolonged exposure to sugary fluids such as milk, formula and juice, especially if used in the bedtime or naptime bottle.
  • Band-Aides and Blackboards - This kid called me the human bowling ball when I came back to school without hair. I just told her that I sold my hair for a million dollars. I told her that I was going to buy a kangaroo with the money, and of course a zoo to keep it in.
  • Beat the Bug: Your Guide to Colds & Flus - About 25 million to 50 million people in the United States will get the flu this year, and more than 60 million people will catch a cold. Will you be one of them? Here are PlanetRx.com recommendations for beating these pesky seasonal sicknesses.
  • Bedwetting Is Common And Usually Normal In Pre-School Age Children - We have a four-year-old daughter who has been toilet trained since she was two. Recently, she started wetting the bed at night, but has no problems during the day. We do not suspect any problem at pre-school since she really seems to love it. Any idea of what should we do?
  • Better Nutrition for Better Teeth & Gums - Cavities are the single most common chronic childhood affliction – five times more common than asthma and seven times more common than hay fever. Despite their prevalence, cavities shouldn’t be an accepted part of childhood. Good oral hygiene habits and nutrition can go a long way toward reducing the risk of cavities.
  • Beyond the Checkup: Many Faces of Your Child's Pediatrician - While treating a child for a cold in the ER, I asked the mother why she had not just visited her doctor. The baby's mother replied, "We have an appointment tomorrow, but that's for shots." She did not understand the full role of her pediatrician.
  • Brain Boosters - A child with good brain health has the opportunity to be more successful in their schoolwork, and that translates to a better school year for both of you. There are many factors that affect brain health, and in this article we'll focus on a few things you can do to make a positive difference in your child's learning and memory function.
  • Can I Put My 8 yr. Old Son On A Diet? - I have an eight year old son who is 51" high and 85lbs. He is hungry all the time and I worry about his food choices. As a baby he suffered from reflux and a feeding disorder that made him sensitive to certain textures in his mouth. Most of the textures that he dislikes, even now, are in the fruits and vegetable family. Therefore, he eats more carbs and meats rather than a balanced diet. My question is, how can I ensure that he is getting enough vitamins from foods without forcing him to eat foods that he dislikes and secondly, is he too young to put him on a diet to lose weight?
  • Can I Use Over the Counter Wart Remover? - My 7 year old granddaughter has 2 warts on the left side of her stomach. They stick out 1/4 inch. She has had them about 6 months. I called the Dr to make an appointment. The cost was $60 to $200. She doesn't have insurance. Is it ok to use a wart remover over the counter?
  • Chicken Pox Vaccination or Not? - My family physician has suggested that we have our 18-month-old daughter vaccinated with the chicken pox vaccine. Is there enough information out there to support this recommendation?
  • Choosing a Green Pediatrician - Shortly after your labor and delivery, the mixed anxiety and joy of this life experience will be in your past, and it will be time to look forward to the future-to the time when your baby will live and grow in the protective environment that you will create in your home. As you did when choosing an ob/gyn, you want to find a pediatrician who is top-notch medically. How much better if he or she is also on the journey to an environmentally sustainable perspective on pediatrics!
  • Cow's Milk During The First Year - My son is 6 1/2 months old and had his first ear infection at 6 months. We were just to the doctor for a check up to make sure the infection is gone. The doctor (whom we trust dearly) mentioned the reason my son had gotten an ear infection so early was from bottle feedings. The doctor wants to start weaning my son from his bottle at nine months.
  • Croup - My 8 year old daughter was diagnosed with croup. I was told to use a cool mist humidifier and give her an expectorant. She has had some coughing episodes that have resulted in her having difficulty catching her breath. How long should croup last and is there anything else I could do to avoid her coughing episodes? I did bring her into a bathroom and turn the shower on to help make it easier for her to breath.
  • Ear Infections and Antibiotics - Do you remember the good old days when we were given an antibiotic for just about everything and often over the phone?? Those days are clearly gone and there's current evidence that they are likely not to return any time soon.
  • Easing Their Terrible Fears - My daughter recently turned 7 years old. About 6 months ago she developed a terrible fear. She is awfully afraid of wind, even a slight breeze, clouds and rain. It is a fear that totally wipes her out.
  • Eating Right for Sleep - Food has a huge impact on a child's well-being. It can energize, increase hyperactivity or induce fatigue. Just as a lack of sleep can jumble a child's thinking or cause learning problems, so can an inadequate diet. Each child is a unique individual, and it's unreasonable to think that "one size fits all" diet advice is realistic.
  • Exercises to Get You and Your Kids Awake in the Morning - The first thing you should do in the morning before getting out of bed is to stretch. I love to do the following cross over back stretch which helps release tension in the lower spine accumulated through the weird positions we put ourselves in through our sleep. Also, if your family is anything like mine, we always end up having two kids in our bed and me sandwiched between them.
