Teaching Kids to Express Anger Appropriately

Click here for a printable version of this tip

Children need to express themselves when they're angry.
Parents can help, by providing guidelines for appropriate
self-expression.

These strategies will minimize inappropriate "back talk"
(rudeness and disrespect):

-- Try to stay calm, while helping your child find another
way to let off steam.
-- Be a role model. When you treat others with respect, your
child is more likely to treat you with respect.
-- If your child talks back, explain that it is inappropriate
behavior and cite a consequence.

Children need to be allowed to express their feelings -
constructively and appropriately.
