Neck Roll Pillow
by Becky Breaux
It's really easy to make one of those neck roll pillows out of an old pair of jeans or pants! You don't even need to know how to sew!
What you will need:
Old pair of jeans (or pants) Jeans
Ribbon in accent color
Pillow stuffing, foam cushion, or anything else to stuff it with
If you're not using denim you'll want to use hem tape, or you can sew the hems
For jeans, cut off one of the legs at the crotch. Cut the other end off at the length you want the pillow to be, so you're left with a 'tube' of denim open at both ends. At this point you could use some fabric paints to add designs. Then wash the fabric a couple of times and put them through the dryer. This will help make the ends frayed in a more natural (and easier!) way than doing it by hand.
Once it's done, all you have to do is stuff the tube, and tie off each end with ribbon, kind of like a Tootsie Roll! If you're using cotton stuffing - stuff it good and full, because it will settle with use. You can even stuff it with what's left of your jeans, if you don't mind it being harder than an average pillow.
If you're using regular pants, you probably want to hem each end of the 'tube' either by sewing, or using iron on hem tape, following the manufacturer's instructions on the tape. Most fabrics just don't fray as attractively as denim :)
Some other things you can do..
- Add lace to the edges (you can even glue it on with fabric glue)
- Add beads or stones to the pillow, especially at the ends past where you tie the tube shut.
- Personalize a pillow for a child! Add their name across the front!
- Using a fabric that coordinates with the rest of your room, cut out pieces and applique to the pillow.
This is a great way to recycle all those pants that don't fit, have a hole in one knee, are worn at the hem, or just really don't have any other use any more.
This is a great one for a teen to do to add a touch of their personality to their room!
