The Heart of Christmas: The Gift of Being

February 12th, 2013 posted by Michele Germain, LCSW

Are you feeling tense during the holiday season? Does holiday tree trimming, mall hopping, office parties, present wrapping, house decorating, gift shopping leave you with mixed emotions? Are you showing up for these events with only half of yourself, so that when you are with your children, partner or others you are not feeling connected? Does your body feel worn out or numb? Is your mind racing with demands and expectations during this time, causing your heart to be heavy? We often forget that the most important gift we can give to our children, family and others is the gift of ourselves. Our true authentic open hearted self. This requires you to be fully present in the moment with whomever you are with and whatever you are doing. It requires you to pause, lean into the moment, let go of the chaotic mind, and drop into your body feeling your feet firmly planted on the ground. It’s not easy to be in the moment, and stay in your open heart. Especially in the middle of a sometimes chaotic day filled with traffic jams, children with immediate needs and those around you stressed out and overwhelmed. This time of year it is easy to be swept up with the demands and the emphasis on material things, and forget about the precious moment of a heart to heart connection. Here are some tips to help you stay present and connected to your heart center. l. Slow down, that means walk slower and talk slower. Pause and connect with yourself, your body and your heart. Ask yourself how you feel? 2. From time to time remind yourself to relax throughout your daily activities. Pick one thing that you are grateful for that day. Example, “I am grateful for getting home safely”. “I am grateful for my friends call today”. 3. Pause and make eye contact with your children, family members, and others whom you are with throughout your day or give them a hug. 4. Learn to say “no” to events or activities without feeling guilty 5. Remember to smile as you move through your day and don’t expect anything in return. When you smile your heart shines through. Your children and loved ones, learn more from what you do and how you act, than what you say. You are modeling an open loving heart for others around you. Keeping your heart open is one of the most important gifts you can give, and it will never be forgotten.
