Click here for a larger view Having a St. Patrick’s Day party and need a fun and super easy cake recipe? You don’t have to be a professional cake decorator to make this little gem. Watch for the leprechaun, he may come looking for his hat!
You will need
white box cake container of white frosting green food coloring black decorator icing green decorator gel small yellow and green candies (we used Nerds) green and yellow decorator sugar
What you do // Mix white cake batter according to box directions. Add 6 drops of green food coloring to batter and mix completely. Bake cake in a 13″ x 9″ pan according to package directions. Allow cake to cool completely. Place a platter or cutting board over the top of the cake pan. Holding it in place, turn pan upside down so that cakecomes out face down on platter. Mix white frosting with green food coloring (8-10 drops, more if needed). Using a sharp knife, trim the cake into a simple hat shape by cutting a line down each side, stopping 2.5″ from the bottom. Save the extra pieces to eat later. Spread the frosting evenly over the entire cake and sides. Smooth with a flat or rubber spatula. Use black decorator icing and a flat decorator topper to add the black hat band. Make the buckle out of yellow candies (see photo). Draw a shamrock in the upper right hand corder of the “hat” with green decorator gel. Fill the center of the shamrock with small green candies. Sprinkle entire cake with yellow and green decorator sugar. Special thanks to Margaret Kilbury of Texas for submitting this idea! Margaret was insired by our Leprechaun Hat Pins in our craft section!
