Beat the Heat Summer Party

February 12th, 2013 posted by Kit Bennett

You don’t need a birthday or special occasion to throw a party for kids in the summer. After all, your kids and their friends are ready to play. Backyards and open spaces are available and summer is the perfect time to create family memories! This “Beat the Heat” party will provide hours of outdoor fun and adventure!

You can keep the decorations to a minimum for this party theme but a few festive touches help to set the stage for fun in the sun.

  • Streamers and balloons in sunny yellow, cool blue and white can be used to decorate the party area.
  • Tie balloon bouquets to the handles of filled ice chests.
  • One or two colorful beach umbrellas in the yard will not only provide color but some much-needed shade for your party guests.
  • Cover your refreshment table with a blue-and-white checked tablecloth and use coordinating plates, napkins and service ware. Clear pitchers filled with fresh lemonade, sliced lemons and sliced strawberries will look lovely on your table.
  • Fill a vase with paper pinwheels to double as a centerpiece and a party favor.

The games and activities in this party are really where you’ll find the fun. Remember the theme “beat the heat” when selecting your activities. Here are some favorites:

  • If drought conditions aren’t an issue provide plenty of sprinkler fun.
  • Fill large plastic tubs with water, cups, funnels and squirt toys.
  • A few days before the party freeze filled water balloons. At party time remove the balloon from the now frozen ball of ice. Place the ice balls into a kiddie pool or plastic tub. This will keep the water cold and the large ice cubes are fun.
  • Play a bucket brigade relay race.
  • Use super soakers for a target game.
  • Have a water balloon toss. Keep children’s age in mind for balloon piece safety and remember to be kind to the birds by picking up all of the balloon pieces.
  • Stage an ice cube melting contest – using ice cubes and sidewalk chalk place ice cubes on a patio label the ice cube with the child’s name. The player with the 1st ice cube to melt completely, is the winner.
  • Paint fences, patios and deck furniture with water, using new paintbrushes and beach pails to hold the water.
  • On the creative side, provide watercolor paints and paint pad, pony beads and lanyard or the supplies to decorate a foam sun visor.

Feed hungry partygoers refreshing finger foods and chilling beverages. Kid friendly summer favorites are:

  • Fruit kabobs, watermelon, popsicles, sandwiches cut with cookie cutters, veggies for dipping, fruit snacks, and rice crispy treats
  • Combine a fun activity with a refreshing treat by using several kickball-styled ice cream makers for the kids. Sprinkles and other favorite toppings can be added.

Finish your party off with fun favors and prizes:

Sports drinks, stickers, squirt toys, swim goggles, marine animal toys, sunscreen, mini handheld fans, popsicle molds, and/or “cool-down bandanas” can be sent home in small beach pails or insulated lunch bags from the dollar store.

Whatever you decide, enjoy some time in the great outdoors. Don’t forget the sunscreen and keep the kids hydrated with plenty of water. Have fun!
