Family Book Clubs: Creating Good Reading Habits with Our Kids

February 12th, 2013 posted by Jan Finlayson

The economic downturn has us staying at home more often, creating a great opportunity to get reacquainted with reading. With our busy lifestyles, it may seem hard to find the time, but there is no better way than reading to enrich our lives and open our minds. It is also another great excuse to get together with girlfriends and other moms. Some clubs focus on one theme – biographies, murder mysteries, classics, romance, etc. Others look to the wide variety and leave it to their members to make individual suggestions. The important thing is that most readers are being exposed to books they may have never picked up before. Book clubs can also be a great way to get kids involved. Reading a book with your child helps to create an affinity for lifelong learning, and teaching them how to enjoy the book through discussion will further their understanding. Creating a book club that includes children is easy to do.

  • Find common interests among classmates’ parents so that the club has a similar age group.
  • Choose books at an appropriate level that are thought provoking. The book should tell a good story that can be interpreted in different ways.
  • Make a list of questions that allow for easy discussion as well as a means to tell about favorite parts of the story.
  • Include books with illustrations – sometimes the most interesting discussions can come from the pictures.
  • Ask a local librarian or book store to help with suggestions. Many children’s book departments are quite extensive, with well versed staff to guide you.

The most important part of the club is for the kids to enjoy the books. This could be a part of your regular book club but only meets every quarter to start. You may find that your child begs to participate every month, especially as they get older.
