Fairy Tale Birthday

February 12th, 2013 posted by Barbara Thomas

Everyone loves a good old-fashioned fairy tale, and kids 6-8 will enjoy this fairy tale birthday.

Use your computer to make invitations on “parchment” in an Old English font.

A few cardboard boxes can be stacked to resemble a castle. For that extra touch, sponge-paint them with gray paint to create a “stonework” look. The birthday child and his/her siblings can help with this.

– Pre-paint some 12′ wooden dowels in gold or silver. Let the kids decorate with ribbons, silk flowers or feathers to make wands.

Princess/Wizard Hat

– Cut a triangle out of posterboard. Fit around each child’s head and staple. Let the children paint and decorate.

– Cut a crown shape out of posterboard, fit to child’s head and let the kids decorate. Games: Go on a “quest” to defeat a dragon or save a prince. Create an obstacle course around your house or yard that the children must conquer. They can climb over a “mountain” (outdoor play equipment or boxes); through a “cave” (open appliance box or tent) etc. Hunt for Cinderella’s slipper: Spray paint an old shoe with gold or silver paint. Play hide and seek with it. Act out a favorite fairy tale, or make up a new one! Read fairy stories, or watch a movie like “The Princess Bride ” or other fairy tales.
