Updating Your Home: Color Trends for 2010

February 12th, 2013 posted by Jan Finlayson

Updating your home can be as easy as changing a paint color or adding some inexpensive accessories. Pantone Laboratories has named Turquoise as 2010’s color of the year. This timeless color has found itself in various forms, from watery hues to vivid tones. It can be found with a multitude of color combinations to update both traditional and modern interiors. Along with turquoise, the new neutral seen most often is “greige”, a combination of beige and gray. From silvery tones to rich taupes, this color is easy to work with and complements both warm and cool tones. Minimalists will love the stark contrast with a deep turquoise or lime green. Traditional interiors will layer various tones of this neutral with rich earth tones. Shades of coral are enjoying a comeback this year as well. Coral is deemed as a color that complements everyone, regardless of skin tone, and is not only popular in clothing but with interiors. Painting a room this color is thought to give anyone a healthier glow and optimistic outlook. Trendy combinations of orange, yellow, lime green, turquoise and white will be found in more modern interiors. These bold colors will accent neutral textures and can be changed easily if used only in the accessories. Look to stores such as Pier One, Pottery Barn, or T.J. Maxx to supply fun and spunky looks to use as accents that are easily changed when they look tired. While it is not always feasible to make major changes in decorating, a can of paint or a few yards of fabric are easy and inexpensive ways to update. Recovering dining seats can be done for under a couple hundred dollars, and painting will run under $50. Look at the new hues and see if one is right for you.
