The Oldest Grandparent on the Web

The special love between grandparents and grandchildren is cherished everywhere. Early last century a grandfather kept in touch with his much loved and missed grandchildren by writing and drawing the world’s largest collection of illustrated correspondence. It includes over 1000 envelopes, cards and little letters all lovingly illustrated with wonderful inventions, scenery from England and India and his animal characters such as Hathi the lovable elephant and Mughli Ji the fish that walks on its tail. Perhaps once in every generation something truly original and unique is discovered and this is how the correspondence of Kaka (as his grandchildren called Sir Henry) has been described since it was rediscovered after 80 years, lying forgotten in a wardrobe. Its simplicity and charm has also resulted in comparisons with Winnie the Pooh and the work of Beatrix Potter. Now, thanks to the Internet, grandparents and grandchildren around the world are enjoying this extraordinary and enchanting expression of love including hearing Sir Henry’s great grandson Charles reading an original letter every week. They can also choose original cards or envelopes to send electronically with their own personal messages. So successful has been since its launch that Sir Henry has started to write and draw again making him the oldest grandparent on the web. Each week he writes and illustrates a new notebook letter on a topical subject -just like his original letters. He is so pleased because the emails that he has received indicate that, thanks to the wonder of the internet, his unique letters and cards are bringing new smiles and pleasure to grandchildren and grandparents around the world who are separated by distance, just as they did to his beloved and greatly missed grandchildren nearly a century ago.
