Elaine, Im sorry to hear about your mother. Sending ((((HUGS))) and along with hopes that things get better for you and her real soon.

Im glad to hear that your son fully recovered from BP. A lot of regular PCP doctors dont know a lot about Bell's Palsy. I went to a specialist who was said that it is very rare to see someone my age ( at the time) that has it, so I can imagine how rare it was for your son to have it. It is the scariest feeling in the world to wake up and realize that you cant move the side of your face. Did they put him on steriods to overcome it? I was on a low dose of steriods. I was a sight, boy, trying to eat and drink through a straw without getting wet!! It is always in the back of my mind that the doc. said that if it were going to reoccur, more than likely it would be around the of 40----Im going to be 36 in May---when I feel that tingly feeling, it always makes me wonder "if".
Did the docs. tell you if there is a chance that it would reoccur with your son? Are there new treatments out there now?

Alida, You can post the name of the book without worry. I know that I sure could use a good book right about now.

I feel stress in my neck and back. I had Bell's Palsy last year, lasted 7 weeks. When I am stressed now, I try to change what I'm doing at the time. It helps. I certainly don't want to look like I did with Bell's Palsy. It affected the right side of my face. I'm in my 50's and acquaintances (I won't call them friends) said, "My brother had a stroke and he looked just like you". I didn't need to hear that.
When I had Bell's Palsy, I got out all my natural medicine books. They also discovered that I had a large brain tumor which turned out to be benign. But, I changed my diet thinking that the brain tumor was caused by the hormones in my food. I went on a fruit, vegetable, nuts died. Mom said I'd starve, but I reminded her that many Mormons and 7th Day Adventists don't eat meat and are the healthiest groups of people in the USA.
It is good that we can recognize that stress does the physical things to our bodies. I hate to pay a doctor for a medical problem only to be told it is "stress". Most of the time she/he is wrong!

Physical response to Stress

I have also become a teeth clencher. It started about 5 years ago when I was pregnant with my first child and working. Now, I think it is more of a habit, but it is sure hard to break. It used to be just at night, but now I clench and grind all day long. I got a mouth guard about 4 years ago because the dentist said there were places on my teeth where I was wearing away the enamel. So, I would also advise all of you teeth clenchers to get a mouth guard to save your teeth. : )

I would also be interested in the name of the book mentioned earlier. If it really seems to help, I'll try anything. I would love to stop clenching my teeth and not have to wear my mouth guard so much. If anyone else knows of some ways to relieve this type of physical response to stress, I would love to hear about it. I also get the stiff neck and shoulders too.

Tami

Tami, our regular doc referred him to an ear, nose and throat specialist, who confirmed that it was BP. Mike's smile started looking a little crooked and was pulling some strange faces and it was my middle daughter who said there was something funny about him. Then he couldn't close his eye. I can't remember which side of his face was affected. I bought an eye patch, but he couldn't stand to wear it. To look at him now, you would never know that he went through that. His case was very mild thank goodness. You should go check out the tingling with your specialist.
Thank you for the hugs. I'm not worried for me, it's my mom and my sister who she lives with that need all the prayers. I go over daily, and do what I can do to help, but since I have to work every week day, I'm not much help until I get off work. We are only hoping and praying that this won't last long. My MIL went into a coma and took her last breath 5 days later, and I thought that was bad, but this is worse watching her suffer and see her frustration.

Here's the book

OK you all, here is the book that I was talking about...it is not the cure-all, but is an eye opener on the power of feelings, and I really do feel that the mind is a very powerful thing!
'Excuse Me, Your LIFE Is Waiting' by Lynn Grabhorn
sounds like a silly title but just read it and you will be amazed!
Also try Yoga and/or meditation to help relax, as well as any other stress you can remove from your life...wish I could do something for you, Elaine....if we could just be there to cook you dinner, or watch your kids......just even jump in the tub with some bath salts, a glass of wine (or cup of tea), and some candles.

You all want to know to a secret? I have some very good friends here on the "corner".
Thank you all for being such a good support system for me. Just being able to vent and have people care, is so important. We all need that.
Thank you all.

stress

I have very physical symptoms when I am stressed. If I've been stressed or sick, I have "fever blisters" that come up on my chin! It's horrible and painful! And ugly! You can count on it!

Stress really reaks havoc on my immune system. I get sick so much easier when I'm stressed.

Sometimes stress will cause my skin to be very sensitive, I can't stand to be touched. Or sometimes it will cause my legs to "itch". Sounds crazy, but true. I just emotionally and mentally shut down...my memory doesn't work as well, etc.

My sister has identical symptoms. Sometimes it will cause us to chill and have fever! Stress!

I also grind my teeth. I had no idea that it could be the cause of my back and neck pain~

I also shake my legs constantly, drives people nuts!

I agree that I also have a great support system here at "FC"
