What Did You Do Frugal Today~January 2017

For encouragement in frugal ways--large and small--look no further. This is where we share helpful hints for stretching our money, saving time and making sure we don't waste resources.

Remember, "frugal" does not mean "don't spend money!" It means "be wise with what you spend!"

Good morning all!!

Sueanne, it is my understanding from a friend whose father lives in FL and also grows moringa trees, that you can keep them bush sized (2-4 ft) and cut them back a couple times a year. Also that you can take cuttings, put them in rooting compound, then plant to have more plants. Obviously you don't get shade that way, but it sounds good to me.

Jean, I love the envelope system. I am sure that yours will be different than mine.

I have the following categories - taxes, lawn care, grocery store, BJ's, Nexium, phone, ink, and Kyler. I also have 2 sections in my wallet - one for gas and one for my fun money. Yours would obviously be different. These made sense for me. There is none for regular bills that I pay by check - tithing, natural gas, electric, cable and the credit cards. The first check I write weekly is to my church with my tithes. I believe in tithing and God always comes first.

I finished one hat and made one yesterday, and started yet another last night.

Made my gel caps filled with cinnamon and those filled with moringa already this morning. Have had breakfast, made tea for iced tea, and am ready to start hooking on the loom to finish the hat I started last night and do another one today.

Better go for now.

Take care all!! Norma

All of you sound really busy, and geared up for the new year. Glad you seem to be doing well. We are well and blessed, and thrilled to be here to see another year! Christmas was spent with DH's brother and family. They have moved to Arizona, and this was the first holiday we've spent with them since 1970. May God bless and prosper all in the new year.

Jean I've been really bad about take out. I need to get back to making out a menu list of 15 meals that I can make from what we have on hand.

My oldest nephew got married on the 30th at the court house. His now wife and her 3 kids have been living with him for several years. They were going to get married Oct '17 but decided they wouldn't be able to save for the wedding they wanted so got married now. They are planning a cookout reception this summer.

Utility bill was down a bit from the previous month with the warmer weather we have been having. Hopefully this month's will be as low.

Norma, I love my Moringa trees they grow so fast and are so good for you. I have been cutting them lower and they do fill out better. Can make them into a living fence for privacy. Peeked into the sheets this morning and they are doing great growing new leaves. The sheets are thin enough to provide enough sun light to let them grow. Continuing feeding them and watering too. Think this year will be able to start cutting once spring arrives and the branches get thicker. I am sure when you come to Florida you will grow a tree of your own even if it is in a large flower pot.
Have a good day,
________
Sueanne

Happy New Year to everyone.

We got a great surprise on New Years Eve. My dil had my first grandson. Brantley was born on 12/31/16 at 4:32pm. He weight 7.5lbs and 19.5 inches. They are both home now and doing well.

Yesterday Dan and I went to Longwood Gardens to see the Christmas display. My daughters got me a membership for a gift. Dan used my contempary free ticket. I get 2 of them for the year. We had a great time.

We put all the christmas decoratioins away.

Have a great Tuesday.

Good morning all!!

Charlotte, congratulations on the new grandchild. Glad to hear he and his mom are both doing well.

Longwood Gardens always does such unique and beautiful displays. Glad you were able to enjoy it this season.

Sueanne, you bet, I am totally going to be growing moringa. Especially now that I know how wonderful a plant it is, and that it is as much a food source as a medicinal plant.

Colleen, I too, have put the Christmas things away, and pared down a few more items as I did it. For the moment, my Christmas things all fit into one large popcorn tin. I still have one box for all the Christmas cards - it holds 5 five smaller boxes of cards.

Roberta, how nice about the wedding, and the financial realization that it is better to just be married, than to make such a fuss if they can't afford it. And it is nice that they are planning a warm weather reception. With it being a cookout reception, everyone can contribute their best recipes as additional "wedding gifts".

Both my gas and electric were down. The gas company has to still "give back" some monies, so they just deducted the amount they had to from everyone's bill. The electric was just less because of the warmer weather.

But my Comcast basic is up another $2. When I first went to basic, it was $15 a month. With this increase it is up over $25 a month.

Laura, glad you and yours are doing well. Wishing you just the best year ever.

My friend Elvia is back in the hospital, and I would ask for prayers for her health. She doesn't see the liver specialist until the end of the month, but she has fluid on both her lungs and heart right now.

Better go for now. I don't have to be in today until 9:30 but I stay until 6 tonight.

Take care all!! Norma

Charlotte congrats on the grandbaby. I have Hunter today and he has been in such a snuggling and hugging mood. His hugs are leaning in on you and saying "ahhhh". Such fun.

Norma, could Elvia's doctor call the specialist to see her as an emergency patient?

This was the 3rd week in a row that I've filled the 50 gal recycle can and then some. Slowly seeing some results with the house.
