2014 Garden

Are you planting a vegetable garden this year? Do you have a garden every year?

I have not had a vegetable garden in years. I have decided to start one this year. I am starting to plan it and decide what I want to plant. I am going to start small. See how it goes this year. I do know I will need a fence to keep deer and rabbits out of it.

We also needed to place fencing around our gardens. In our raised beds we used a cold-welded combination fence with smaller holes at the bottom and larger at the top, mostly to keep the chickens out of it.

In our flat beds we used four foot chicken wire (two x two foot chicken wire layers).

But if you are talking deer and groundhogs, that is serious fencing. Chain link for the deer. For the groundhogs, at the community garden we laid chicken wire underneath the soil perimeter and splayed out to the outside. It helped some but not completely.

You know though a simpler solution might be} My neighbor made pvc piping cages to put over top of his beds, they can be removed when they are working and replaced when they are not, so maybe planning smaller beds with top cages will work for your needs. His cages were 4 x 8 foot, about the size of his 8 inch high raised beds.

Ellen thanks for the ideas. I will see what I want to do. Deer a the biggest problem that we have where we live.

I would love to start my garden soon now that I dug up all the weeds that came up with our mild winters.

With the price of zucchini want to start that first. Romaine is also on my list for salads and tomatoes. Fresh string beans are also easy to grow and plenty of peppers and eggplants. Hopefully my son will be feeling better to take me shopping for what I need to get started. Have a $40 gift certificate to use at Lowe's which will help.

If the snow ever goes away, I have purchased some seeds to plant. I would like to find some wood pallets to plant in this year.

I planted my spaghetti squash seeds today. Hopefully I get a bumper crop this year. I save the seeds from the squash I buy to eat. They are so expensive but you do get a lot of seeds to share.
Planted sunflower seeds in a sunny spot on the other side of the house. Have room for some lettuce plants between the fig trees they need some protection from the strong sun.

The red mulch makes the flower beds really look larger and more attractive. Laughed when my neighbor took all the empty bags that I put out for garbage. They do come in handy for weeding small areas. Hated to leave them in the
garage with my allergies. Was a little windy today but managed to get a lot done. Was refreshing today with temps in the 70s.
