I have traveled from Toledo, Ohio to Centralia, WA years ago with 4 kids--12, 13, 8, and 3. At that time you could go thru Salt Lake City, UT. It was a great trip. Our car attendant was Kurt Katz. I can still remember and the 3 year old is now 22. He made the trip. He would tell us things that we were going to pass (during the daytime). My children loved him. Sometimes they play games for kids too.
I have also made the trip from Toledo to Salt Lake City, UT with a ADHD 3 year old. That took more planning--books on tape, snacks etc.
And I've traveled with 2 kids--20 and 14 from Fredricksburg, VA to Iowa. A better trip, now they are independent.
Anyway, the layover in Chicaco was greatly appreciated on each trip. I prefer the trains from Chicago west. Ask the car attendant if you can travel in the handicapped area on the bottom floor. On one trip they put all the moms with kids in there. Everyone snacked and napped at the same time by agreement. It was wonderful and the kids didn't bother anyone.
The seats tilt way back so you can be really comfortable when you sleep in them.
Have a good time.
It is about 4 hours from Portland to Seattle. There is plenty to see around Portland, but the best is a trip down the Columbia to Astoria. Stop in and see the Astor Column, the fort where Lewis and Clark spent the winter (very interesting) and be sure and visit Cannon Beach. It is better than the pictures.

Morelia, when are you going?
Here's a tip for you-

good idea Coll I did the same thing and I was only going from here to NJ and back (a week later) I put the label inside and out side of my suit cases even in my jacket etc. On my camera's never misplaced anything but sure could have. Hope you have a great trip. I know Donna did. Mine was short but sure enjoyed it.

Thanks for the tip...I have a lot of address labels.
I am getting SO anxious.....8 days and counting.

We have so many things planned!

-renew our vows
We have had a rough go of it lately and I will feel so good to have my big brother's blessing. I mean I know we've been married 15 years, but my brother is so important to me!

-the grotto
For Good Friday...check out this link gang
www.thegrotto.org It's beautiful

-the elevator at the end of the Oregon trail
-the Columbia River gourge
-the ocean of course

Just to name a few. Plus my brother's family is hosting a potluck Easter Egg hunt! I am BEYOND excited. Never spent any holidays that I can remember with my brother!
I can barely contain my self!

BTW....regarding the train trip. Does any one know how far the Navy Pier is from Union Station? What would be the best and fastest way to get there? I thought Mags and I could go there on our 6 hour pitstop?

Thanks in advance gang!

Morelia,
Which train routes have you decided upon?
Were you sure to get a different route each way to see different scenery?

You can catch the L a couple blocks from Union Station to the waterfront . Navy pier is a fun place to see but keep in mind it is March and will be quite windy! The attractions are not likely open this time of year..............but just seeing the wonderful Lake Michigan is awesome!! Chicago is also known for it's delis and pizzerias!!

Take tons of pictures and I KNOW you are going to have a good time!!!

hugs, train

Donna...do you think it might be too windy for the baby?
Is there any indoor things, like a ship or sub we could see on the pier?
Would we have time or just be rushed?

We are taking the same route both ways coz there was a price difference and my big brother paid for the trip.

I am thinkin' if we "sight see" in Chicago...that we will be ready to snooze on the train after that.

Are the red caps expensive?

Thanks
