A frugality bonus find

I went to the thrift store today to get some dress up clothes for dd to play with, I found this sweet little velvet shirt for her while there. It purple with a purple silk rose at the neck and ruffled sleeves and a gold bee beside the rose.
Get it home go to throw it in the wash and the bee is a pin, ok, take the pin off and I am looking at it. It's about the size of a loonie with a 'crystal' head gold body and wings. I flip the thing over and it's stamped 18k!! I don't know what to do If it is real I have to return it somehow to it's owner. I phoned the shop back and asked if there was anyway to find out who the clothes came from and naturally no. Dd loves it, go figure, dh says well you bought it what are you worrying about, just put it away for dd. what should I do? I was thinking of an ad in the paper maybe... I don't know.

Not knowing what size town you come from I would say:

a) if you come from a very small town, a newspaper ad without any details asking a person to identify the pin would be a kind thing to do I would run it for no more than a week

OR

b) if your town is more than 2,000 in population, I probably wouldn't bother and do what your dh said.

JMHO!

I agree with Amanda, depending on the size of your town. It might be looking for a needle in a haystack.
You could maybe run it too a jeweler too make sure it is real also, before you go to the trouble of trying too find the owner. Make sure it is not just plated costume jewelry.

Dh took it to the jewlers and it's real.
3/4 carat in diamonds and 18k gold.
I called the thrift store and left my number that if anyone calls there looking for a peice of jewlery to call me. I never said what it was. I decided against the paper, too big of a city.
I don't know why something like that was doing on a childs shirt .
I think I will look more closely at the thrift store clothes from now on

Hi otheila,

I think you have done the best you can in the situation. It is really refreshing to see someone being so honest!

Give yourself a time limit, say 6 weeks, and if no one claims it, you can keep it guilt-free!
