I'm having a garage sale!

What to do? I've never had one before. My cousin and I are doing it together.

Have the kids go through their rooms and decide on what they want to get rid of; you'll be surprised!! Put a price on most of your stuff before your garage sale, so when you're setting up you can just bring it all out to the garage. My friend and I usually organize the clothes by sizes and put up signs if we have time.

Make sure you have easy-to-read signs at the street corners by your house. Put a ladder at the end of your driveway with a "garage sale" sign on it; this will keep people from driving on your driveway.

Have a cooler with pop to sell. We also make cookies to sell if we have time.

Gather up all of those McDonalds/Burger King toys and put them in a box with "5 (or 10) cents each" marked on it. You wouldn't believe who will rummage through that box--grandpas, etc. And it will keep the kids busy while their mom looks at all your stuff.

If you put an ad in the newspaper, ask if they have free garage sale signs. Make sure you have lots of change, including five-dollar bills for all the shoppers who just stopped at the ATM. Don't let anyone bargain you down on the morning (or first day) of your sale; tell them to stop back the next day and see if the item is still there.

Good luck!
