Solutions to 10 Household Annoyances

by Mary Ellen Pinkham at

1. You can't get a sticker off the car, window, wall, etc.

To remove the sticker, heat it with a hair dryer until it feels warm, and then carefully scrape it away with a plastic razor blade (available at an auto parts store) or a credit card. For any leftover glue, use Un-du Adhesive Remover, Goo Gone or a similar adhesive remover (available at most crafts stores).

2. The floor is hairier than your husband's head

Every bathroom should have a hand vacuum to pick up hairs quickly. But if you don't have a hand vac handy, wiping with a nylon stocking will pick the hairs right up.

3. The fitted sheet is hard to pull on

The correct way to put on a fitted sheet is to slip on two corners that are diagonally opposite one another, then slip on the other two.

4. You can't dust under furniture

To clean under a chest of drawers, simply pull out the bottom drawer to get access for the vacuum. A leaf blower can blow dust from under heavy objects such as beds, sofas, refrigerators, etc. But do this before you dust the rest of the room.

5. The drawer pull won't stay screwed

Fill the hole with a bit of steel wool, a matchbook or a couple of toothpicks, then push the pull into place.

6. Pictures hang crooked

Use a glue gun to apply a dab of glue on the bottom corners of the frame. Let the glue dry before hanging. The little "mounds" will press against the wall and keep the picture from moving. Or place a small amount of mounting putty (available at hardware stores) behind one corner of the frame.

7. Spray cans get clogged

Put the stem in a bottle of rubbing alcohol, then give it a few squirts and it opens right up. You can also save the tips from empty cans to replace clogged tips as necessary.

8. A door is sticking

Rub chalk on the edge of the door, and then shut it. Open the door and plane or sand the area where the chalk is missing. Or, if the door is sticking on a high spot, just tape a piece of rough sandpaper underneath. In a few days, normal usage will have done the sanding for you.

9. Everything is covered with lint

Don't ever dry lint-creating items such as chenille or new towels with lint-attracting items such as permanent press or corduroys. If a pair of pants or other garment is covered with bits of tissue or lint, run it through the dryer with a couple of fabric softener sheets.

10. The plastic bag keeps slipping inside the garbage pail

Use binder clips from the office supply shop or potato chip clips to hold the bag to the sides of the pail.

Solution to Household Annoyances #11.

Crib sheets keep pulling off mattress (active baby).

Use a diaper pin or two to fasten crib sheets taught around corners of baby mattress, overlapping sheet ends/corners the same as you would when pinning a diaper.

I had to laugh at the leaf blower solution to dust bunnies under the dresser. The image of flying bunnies throughout the bedroom should not be a surprise. You could use a yardstick with an old sock rubber banded to the end.

LOL! Yes, I must say using a leaf-blower would be QUITE counterproductive! Nothing like creating MORE work for oneself and MORE of a mess!
