I Never Met...a Vinegar I Didn't Like

"That's vinegar to your teeth." the proverb goes. But I never met a vinegar I didn't like! Which vinegar do you grab for first and why do you choose it?

Is it what you grew up with, or the foods you prepare, or an acquired taste? Do you use herb seasoned vinegars?

This morning I put some Italian dressing on cucumber salad. Then it came time to make up a new batch of salad dressing. Which vinegar would I choose from today?

A quick look into my cupboard revealed the following choices: apple cider, balsamic, red wine, raspberry shrub, white vinegar, plain rice vinegar and mirin (sweetened) and rice seasoned for sushi rice.

What is about tart that we gravitate toward to give flavor to our cooking?

I chose apple cider, my all time favorite only because I haven't found a red wine brand I like. Apple cider vinegar can be made from apple peels, cores, etc. Recycling apples on the frontier gave the settlers a ready supply of vinegar for cooking and cleaning. Vinegar at safe levels for eating has to have an acidity of 5%. I always wanted to try doing this in a recycled plastic milk jug in the kitchen.

How do you combine vinegar with other ingredients to make savory, sweet, tart, salty flavors come alive?

I mostly use balsamic vinegar. I like to put it in salsa, mix it with some oil and use it for salad dresseing. I'll mix it in some stew or use it when frying noodles. I just love it's sweet flavor.
A favorite snack of mine is to slice up a tomato and soak the slices in balsamic vinegar and oregeno and then let them chill in the fridge.

Wow, ellenmelon! You have a LOT of vinegar!

I have: white (which I have in the kitchen and the laundry room since I use it as a fabric softener)
balsamic
apple cider
red wine
white wine
rice vinegar (plain)

Balsamic vinegar and thyme make a delicious sauce for poultry.

Wow I didn't know white vinegar can be used as a fabric softner. How much do you put in with the clothes?

I put a quarter or half cup in the fabric softener spot.

I put a little less than 1/4 cup in the fabric softener dispenser and fill it the rest of the way with water. It works great. And at $1.59 a gallon, it's WAY cheaper than Downy.

Ellen, I just fill the thing the rest of the way with water. Don't know why...maybe because when I bought the machine the installer said that when you put softener in the dispenser you should fill it with water. I guess I'm under the impression that it must be completely full in order to work?

thanks for the tip Happy6 on vinegar removing lint, now I know what to do when fleece gets in with the dark towels!

(I hope you don't mind that I deleted the first couple submissions, that happens to me sometimes too)
