I bought the book because I knew I wanted it and would use it.

I donít do everything she says but use the books to get into the mindset.
I use the frugal thread the same way. It keeps me focused

Back in the day I received the Tightwad Gazette's newsletters. Some of her ideas were way out there for me but they allowed her family to live extremely cheap.

I'd suggest picking 2-3 ideas a week that work for your family and do then then the next week pick another 2-3 ideas and incorporate them into your lifestyle. This way you don't overwelm yourself and family with the changes.

Roberta good idea, I often don't tell the family right away it is a frugal thing. I just say let's try this and it usually works

I haven't read the tightwad Gazette, but I do know that washing dishes by hand is way more economical than using our DW (though I still get lazy sometimes). I also try to do laundry only when we have large loads to do and use dryer on cool evenings (we have he w/D) with 50 min drying time (depending on fabric type = less drying time / indoor hang-drying). For watering my indoor plants I use the water globes, our cats use something similar for their water dish (my aunt just gave us a "jug" water dish). I have also been using more coupons than before, both from newspaper and Coupon clipping links, and friends who pass theirs on to me. ;-)

Oh yeah, and we do not have A/C here so we are regulated to using fans when the house is 84* (+) even with windows open and blinds / shades closed

I'm a firm-believer in the idea that hand-washing (if done frugally), far exceeds that of any electric dishwasher.

Fill basin the one you use to wash everything in with enough water to cover the largest item, the cycle rinse all washed items after. (By cycle rinse I mean turning on and off the faucet selectively as you rinse each item).

With a dishwasher you have to figure in the electricity used to run the machine, plus the noise factor.

I've been hand-washing dishes most of my life and will never go the other way.

I hate dishwashers and personally have never
used them. The one in this house does not work so
no prob for me.
And I use the dryer only when really need to

I still wash floors by hand (on my hands and knees), and IMO nothing competes with the end result.
