Boy cheerleaders

Does anybody else here have a teenage boy who is a cheerleader?

After working out with the girls all spring and summer, my 15-year-old son just made his high school's cheerleading squad, as the only boy. We are proud of him. Most kids in school think it's great, but he has been taking some guff from boys on the wrestling team; his response has been "You work out with sweaty smelly guys. I work out with good smelling girls. Who's crazy?"

He is very athletic, strong and muscular, and holds a black belt in karate, but this is his new challenge and he's lovin' it. He will be wearing a uniform of t-shirt and track pants to coordinate with the girls. He doesn't have to wear a hairbow like them, though.

If anyone has a cheerleader son, I'd love to hear about his experience.

Don't have a cheerleader son, but wanted to say "Good for him"!! He is a smart guy, those wrestlers are jealous of your son, and wish they had the guts enough to do what he has. Hope he has a great season!

Don't some of the college teams have boy cheerleaders? They seem to do a lot of tumbling too.

Yes, my supervisor at work (a guy) was a cheerleader in college! Back around the turn of the 20th century, when cheerleading got started, it was all-male and considered a very prestigious post on college campuses.

So my son has cheered at two games now. The football team has lost both, but the cheerleaders are doing great. His uniform has not arrived yet, so he is cheering in a white school t-shirt and red shorts (school colors are red, white and blue).

The one thing he needs to do is get peppy. He doesn't bounce up and down and yell like the girls. He's great at the stunts, but for the cheers, he just sort of walks through them. I attribute this to his training as a martial artist - they don't smile in competition or performance, they just look grim and intent.

The coach thinks he's doing great, though!

DS is at practice getting ready for Homecoming tomorrow....the cheerleaders take part in the parade, and then the game. It's supposed to rain...hope the weather stays OK. He also cheered at the pep rally this afternoon, but I haven't yet heard how that went.

P.S. To whoever develops the smilies, could we have a boy cheerleader?
