How much is too much video game playing?

My boys were always asking me to buy them video games, which was expensive, so our compromise was to get them a subscription to GameFly (if you don't know, it's basically NetFlix for games). They're happy playing, and I'm happy saving money, but now there's a new problem -- they're playing games quite a bit. Their grades are still good, but should I worry? How much is too much? Your thoughts?

Amelia, I think it's different for every family....I can only tell you what we do in our house.

Video games are for "after dinner" only--and we eat late, around 6:15. Homework & chores must be done before any games.

This basically limits the amount of game time the kids have, before it's time for showers and bedtime.

Are your kids playing to the point that they don't want to do anything else? It's important to keep a healthy balance. They should be getting outside to play pick-up ball games, or ride bikes, or skate.....they should be spending some time reading....they should have other things they are willing to spend time with friends doing besides video games. If not, they're playing TOO much, in my opinion.

Funnily enough, dh and I just laid down some ground rules yesterday: no video games until all the homework is done and dinner is eaten, and no games for more an hour on a weeknight and two hours on a weekend night. When they complained, we threatened to take away the GameFly subscription altogether, and that certainly quieted them down!

So I think it's under control now, but thanks Barb!

In my house, playstations are for school holidays and weekends only. (even then we schedule breaks so they are not on for hours on end)
Hand held games are for after jobs are done in the morning before school, or after homework or dinner (depends on what homework has to be done.)

Everytime I go over to my boyfriend's house he always has the Xbox on. It's always a battle to get him away from it.
