Might not be for us, we'll see!

We just found out that three dogs, three cats, 1 bird, two Chinchillas, and a ferret might be a problem. Especially the ferret. She is the SWEETEST pet we own, but they are list as dangerous exotics!
I couldn't leave my kids for 8 hours a day, I'd miss their whole childhood!

I just posted a thread in the adoption forum as Nov. is adoption awareness month.
My first husband (now deceased) and I fostered in Fl. for 3 years, we had about 16 children. It was a wonderful experience. Fl. treats their foster parents (or at least our county did) like GOLD. They are supportive, helpful, call you back immediately. All your concerns are treated as first priority.

I adopted one of the foster children. My 14 dd was a cocaine baby placed with me at 12 weeks.

Now: AS for Illinois: my current husband and I decided we wanted to get back into it. We fostered a sibling group of 3 for a year. The state of Illinois has privatized their foster care and no one knows who has what kids. Foster parents are treated as babysitters. Once you say yes to the kids, you never see the caseworker unless it is time for a visit. No one calls you back. We were lied to about funding for counseling, funding for activities. Our kids Guardian ad litem never made a visit, never called us back about our concerns.
The four year old was self destructive and dangerous. I had to march into the supervisor's office and threaten to contact the State Attorney in order to get therapy for her. The therapist later said she had attatchment disorder and NEVER should have been in a home with other children!
Illinois was not a good experience, perhaps it was our particular agency although in talking with other foster parents here no one has a really good story to share.
Talk, talk, talk to other foster parents in your area. Make sure you have lots of support because that is the maker or breaker of whether or not you can survive the experienc.e

There are blessing to be had but there are challenges you cannot imagine.
Good luck in your decision.

Had we not had such a large family, I definitely would have done foster care.
