July 2004 Calendar of Events

1-3: Ice Cream & Independence – Mark Foutch Brass Band, Virginia Theatre, Champaign
An evening of patriotic music and celebration are sure to prepare you for the best 4th of July ever! The band features over 40 members and all guests receive free ice cream to eat during the show! 1-4: Rantoul Sesquicentennial Celebration, Rantoul
Happy 150th Birthday, Rantoul! Numerous events in this celebration include a Miss Rantoul pageant, 15 decades of history fashion show, tours of Octave Chanute Aerospace Museum, sporting events, 1920’s and 1940’s dances, games, car and farm shows, parade, church festival, and fireworks. 2-4: 4th of July Sizzler First Pitch Baseball Tournament, Various
First Pitch Baseball was started in 2003 by Don V. Flynn in Champaign, Illinois. Don has been involved with travel baseball for over 10 years. He organized and coached both the Champaign Blaze and Champaign Flyers traveling baseball teams. Both of these organizations have hosted successful tournaments in the past. Many midwest coaches and parents have asked for more tournaments in Champaign. Champaign-Urbana, home of the University of Illinois, offers excellent shopping and restaurants, a vibrant downtown, numerous recreational activities, reasonably priced hotels, and is a desirable central Illinois location to spend a weekend playing ball. 4: Freedom Celebration, Champaign-Urbana

4: Freedom Fest, Lake of the Woods, Mahomet

7: Discovery Days for Children, Early American Museum, Mahomet, 10-11:30am

7-11: Fisher Fair, Fisher Fairgrounds, Fisher

8-11: Historic Farm Days, Penfield, IL

9-10: Shades of Blue, Crystal Lake, Urbana, 6-10pm

11: Land of Lincoln Quilters Show, Early American Musueum, Mahomet, 1-4pm
The Land of Lincoln Quilters Association will present a quilt show and demonstrations. Quilts can also be registered that afternoon as part of the Illinois Quilt Research Project. Contact (217) 586-2612 or visit www.earlyamericanmuseum.org for more information.

12-16: Hook a Kid on Golf Tee Level Clinic, Lake of the Woods, Mahomet
This clinic is designed for kids between the ages of 8 and 13 who have never golfed before, but are interested in learning. This clinic will emphasize basic golf fundamentals, grip, proper posture, alignment, putting, chipping, and full swing. Instruction will be given through skill basked drills, special presentations, and fun games and contests. Participants receive a starter set of golf clubs, in addition to other golf related items. 8:30am-12:00pm. Fee is $115 for residents and $130 for non-residents. 12-16: White Sox Training Center Baseball Camps, Zahnd Park, Champaign
White Sox Camp staff creates an organized, professional learning environment of encouragement and positive reinforcement. The formula is simple: assemble the finest teams of coaches armed with the White Sox training curriculum; make it fun; keep it interesting; always be supportive and enthusiastic and never stop teaching! In addition to excellent instruction, students will receive a pair of tickets to three White Sox games, a training center hat, bag, and t-shirt. 15-18: Champaign Urbana Theatre Company – Fiddler on the Roof: Virginia Theatre, Champaign
Attempting to live a normal life filled with Jewish traditions, the people of Anatevka, a small Jewish community in Tsarist Russia, wrest a precarious, simple living from the soil. Tevye, a dairyman, is searching for appropriate husbands for his three eldest daughters. In a break with tradition, his daughters refuse to accept the wishes of the matchmaker, Yente, and their father.
Instead, they marry the men that they love. Meanwhile, Russians are instigating terrible pogroms against the Jewish people in Russia. As they put together their few belongings, the villagers mourn for the sorry little place which familiarity and hardship shared has made their home, Anatevka. This clinic is designed for kids between the ages of 8 and 15 who have had a basic introduction to golf and are preparing for on-course play. Emphasis is placed on rules, etiquette, course management, and play opportunities. Fee is $65 for residents and $80 for non-residents. Bowling is a sport that promotes physical fitness, teamwork, social skills, and healthy competition. In this week of camp, kids will learn the fundamentals of bowling, including scoring and bowling etiquette. They will get to meet, talk, and listen to a guest speaker each day and there will be a tour of the back. A daily snack will be served. Bowling shoes and ball will be provided.
