How do you feel about the state's education problems?

Hi guys, being new to the state I'd like to get some feedback about the state's education budget problems. I'm not bringing this up as a politicial thread but simply one parent wondering what's going on Jefferson City? I know the legislaturers won't consider taking a pay cut instead of cutting our children's educations

Well, it seems that our school district is more interested in having a warm body to fill the position vs actual teachers. The salaries are at an all time low for our district and we have very few teachers who stay more than a few years.

My children are lacking in their education, so we've decided to homeschool from here out. As scary as it is, it's the right decision for us.

Hi Kathie, our district is apparently in good shape. My teen's coach/teacher said they were losing 3 teachers, so that's not too bad. We have one high school & it was originally built in 1964 and is outdated and overcrowded. A bond issue was passed last year so that a state of the art high school will open late fall. I have been happy with dd's elementary, not sure how many teachers they are losing, I think it's 3. We are a small district, altho' not as small as most down here in the SouthWest.

Surely there are options available besides cutting education budgets. What about that tabacco tax thing? I've heard it mentioned as an option. I just don't understand why there's such a rush to cut education when there's still "fat" that can be trimmed (And don't get me started on cutting social services!!

When we lived in Jackson (just outside of Cape Girardeau) we took our DDs out of the public schools and put them into a private school. It was the best thing for our DDs. They literally blossomed.

We felt that the public schools were too interested in test scores and not the kids. For about 2 weeks before the standardized tests, the classes would almost exclusively do practice tests. That is why they have fairly high test scores. I did not want my DDs to be coached to improve their test scores.

Our district is the pits. They are so concerned about being "blue ribbon" that they will do anything to up scores and move a kid on, whether or not it is in the child's best interest. The former middle school principal is an s.o.b. who now works for the superintendent....This guy was so cruel to my son that the boy, now 20, still suffers from the emotional abuse. My daughter will NEVER attend this school district. It will be home schooling all the way. It has gotten worse since the "no child left behind" crew got in power in Washington. All of the revenue from the gambling casinos was supposed to go into the state education fund. HA!!! Big joke, big lie, big mob b.s.

Can you tell that I despise our district? If we lived where I went to school it would be a different matter. Not here. Not ever. Over my dead body.
