August is Frogs, Teddy Bears & Race Cars at The Children’s Museum of Cleveland

August is Frogs, Teddy Bears & Race Cars
at The Children’s Museum of Cleveland!

The entire month of August is packed full with a variety of programs that will furnish parents, grandparents, and childcare providers with fun, educational activities for their children age birth to 8 years. Special events occurring this month include: Froggy Friday on Friday, August 1st; “Invent It! Race Cars” Family Workshops ($) on Saturdays, August 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th and a Adopt a Teddy Bear Day on Thursday, August 14th. Many additional programs and activities will also occur throughout the month. All programs and events are open to the public with regular paid Museum admission unless noted with ($).

NOW THROUGH AUGUST 10, 2008 – Abracadabra! Everyday Magic. During their “magical” experience children of all ages will gain an understanding of the many things in our daily lives which appear to be mystical and magical but can often be explained through principles of math and science. Whether you are pulling a rabbit out of a hat, creating a chemical reaction using only your body heat, or decoding secret messages, you’ll want to visit before it all disappears!

GRAND OPENING AUGUST 23, 2008 – Healthier Ever After. Get fit and have fun as a family! Kids can move and groove, shake and stretch, even climb and slide in The Children's Museum of Cleveland’s newest exhibit. This fairy-tale themed gallery space provides opportunities for families to learn about nutrition, fun food facts and even new ways to move your bodies! Families visiting the Museum for the Grand Opening will receive kid-friendly recipe books, healthy tips and other goodies to get your family ready for a healthy, happy new school year! This exhibit will also feature wonderful works of child art created by the 50 winning Cleveland Municipal School District students as part of the “Fruit and Veggie More Matters Poster Contest Campaign.” Exhibit on display daily during regular Museum hours through October 5, 2008.

This month’s activities, events and programs include:

Froggy Friday – Friday, August 1st – Activities at 11 a.m. & 3 p.m. – Earn a sticker for your Leap Into Action Passport as you explore different types of frogs from around Ohio, learn cool frog facts and even create your own frog game. Meet the giant 5’ frog “Vern” who will be visiting the Museum from 11 a.m. to Noon.

“Invent It! Race Cars” Family Workshop ($) – Saturdays, August 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd and 30th – 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. – Build, test and play with your very own model car! Families will work as a team to construct their own racing machine. Learn how balance, gravity, weight and shape affect the design of the invention. Measure how far your racing machine moves across the room, and then adjust parts to improve your design. Play with and test your model until you create the ultimate racing machine! All participants will take home their invention, a family worksheet and extra challenges to continue exploring at home! (Workshop fee: $5 per person, in addition to Museum admission. Recommended for children ages 3 to 8 years.)

Adopt a Teddy Bear Day – Thursday, August 14th – Activities from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. – Join The Children's Museum of Cleveland and the Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital Injury Prevention Center to celebrate the start of a new school year. Earn your “Teddy Bear Adoption Certificate” by completing health and safety stations around the Museum. Once you’ve successfully completed all stations, you can even take your new teddy bear home with you! Teddy Bears available FREE to the first 100 children present at the Museum. (Museum guests are welcome to bring their own favorite stuffed animal to take through the Teddy Bear Care Clinic instead if they choose.)

EXTREME Magic Makers ($) – Create projects and perform experiments while learning the magic of math, science and art. Families will work together to uncover the mysteries of everyday magic all around us! Classes will include animal facts, block and magnet play, music, colors, nature, stories and more. (Class fee $1 per child. Recommended for ages 3+. Children must be accompanied by at least one adult.)

Mother Goose Math – Meet Mother Goose and her goose Henry! Help Mother Goose tell a story and learn to count along the way.

Messy Art ($) – Get creative! Use paint, shaving cream, food, sand, leaves and even recycled objects to design amazing works of art!

BAM! Bodies & Minds – Games, crafts, music and movement. This series of family health and wellness programs will have children and adults asking for more!

Creative Movements – Move, groove, rock & roll to music. Yoga, dance and drums are just some of the ways we’ll get our bodies busy!

Fine Arts Studio – Explore textures, colors and different ways to make art. Projects may include painting, collage, sculpture, stencils and more.

Family Book Club – Join us for an interactive story time. Have fun with rhymes, letter sounds, music, poems, silly words, dancing and more!
