Children’s Museum of Phoenix

Suns’ Sarver, Colangelo co-chair fundraising campaign

WHAT:The Children’s Museum of Phoenix celebrates the realization of a dream with an exciting, fun, and celebratory groundbreaking ceremony at the historic Monroe School in downtown Phoenix, future home of the museum. Not your usual groundbreaking, this one will see shovels turn rainbow-colored sand on the grounds of the Monroe School and will mark the start of a year-long renovation and restoration project. The Museum is scheduled to open in fall 2007.

The ceremony will include an address from Mayor Phil Gordon, as well as Phoenix Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver and Suns CEO Jerry Colangelo. Both Sarver and Colangelo are co-chairs of the Museum’s “Childhood Dreams Built by You” fund-raising campaign.

"This project preserves our city's past and, at the same time, invests in its future," says Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon, "by using the historic Monroe School for this museum to inspire our young children -- the future of Phoenix -- to learn, play and create."

WHEN:Saturday, April 8th, 2006
1:00 to 3:00 pm

WHERE:The front yard of the historic Monroe School
Seventh Street and Van Buren, Phoenix

WHY: A festival atmosphere will abound as children and adults alike will be treated to free hot dogs and lemonade, be entertained by the North High School marching band and be able to explore some of the museum’s interactive exhibits like Texture Café, Cardboard Construct-o-rama! and In the Pipeline. A mountain of rainbow colored sand to play in, run up, and shovel through will make the celebration complete. Fun for children and adults alike!

WHO: The Children’s Museum of Phoenix is dedicated to opening a children’s museum in the historic Monroe School in downtown Phoenix that will engage the minds, muscles and imaginations of children and the adults who care about them.

I know this is exciting. Our Children's Museum in Wilmington, NC is opening this Monday the 24th. They closed the old museum last year and built a whole new building in a new location. It's really going to be so great and so much bigger. There will be room for many more kids to interact. We're not going to be able to go to opening day, but at the first opportunity I'll get my daughter and kids together and check it out.
We don’t know who we are until we see what we can do… Martha Grimes
