What is most symbolic of St. Patrick's Day?

When someone mentions St. Patrick's Day, what the first thing that comes to your mind? Is it a leprechaun, or maybe the smell of corned beef and cabbage? Perhaps your first thought is the color green and four leaf clovers. Tell us your thoughts!

I received this in an email today and it is SO true. My Irish-born grandmother would not TOUCH corned beef. She insisted that it is British food, not Irish.

GOOD GRIEF - NOT BEEF!

I just want to put something straight
About what should be on your plate,
If it's corned beef you're makin'
You're sadly mistaken,
That isn't what Irishmen ate.

If you ever go over the pond
You'll find it's of bacon they're fond,
All crispy and fried,
With some cabbage beside,
And a big scoop of praties beyond.

Your average Pat was a peasant
Who could not afford beef or pheasant.
On the end of his fork
Was a bit of salt pork,
As a change from potatoes 'twas pleasant.

This custom the Yanks have invented,
Is an error they've never repented,
But bacon's the stuff
That all Irishmen scoff,
With fried cabbage it is supplemented.

So please get it right this St. Paddy's.
Don't feed this old beef to your daddies.
It may be much flasher,
But a simple old rasher,
Is what you should eat with your tatties.

I think of St. Patrick!

As a child I was in awe of the fact that he chased all of the snakes out of Ireland. LOL!

As an adult I'm in awe of his faith. He was kidnaped as a teen and taken to Ireland as a slave. He escaped after 6 years and became a priest. When he was 46 he returned to Ireland to face the Druids and set the people free.

I usually think of the color green, and my niece Breyona's birthday.

since I'm part Irish I always think of anything Irish . I had wanted to get married on St. Patricks Day, but my girlfriend did the year before I got married and it fell on the wrong day the year we got married , so I ended up married on the 15th, the Ides of March-not a day of good luck in the past....LOL
I try to wear something green and make sure everyone else does too!

When I was in high school I met a girl whose parents made her wear orange on St. Patricks day. She told me that she use to cry when St. Patricks day was on a school day because the kids would pinch her and she would come home black 'n' blue. Her parents told her she was suffering for her faith. She tried to explain that it was a kid thing and had nothing at all to do with faith but they didn't understand.

Everyone should be allowed to enjoy St. Patricks Day!!!

I was married on St. Patrick's Day and had 3 beautiful children from that marriage, so that's the first thing I think of when March 17th rolls around.

Hi ghc,

I've got to ask, were you wearing a green garter?

Getting married on St. Patricks day must have been fun!

Love & Prayers,
Linda
