Question Activities for September 11th

I would like to know if any other troops out there will be doing anything special for September 11th and what it will be.

Here, our girls will be participating in various flag ceremony honor guards at school functions on 9/11. There are not many other kids who know how to respect the colors, other than scouts at the elementary and middle school levels. .

We also plan to attend community events as a unit when ever possible.

We will be talking about our fears and concerns, in small forums, as we live only 30 miles north of NYC's "ground zero".

I came close to loosing my sister-in-law, on 9/11 last year, but thank God, she stopped for a cigarette before going up to her office, and was in the plaza when the first plane hit. She worked on the 52nd floor of tower 2. We didn't her from her for 8 hours after the plane hit. The longest 8 hours of our lives. We have stopped bothering her about her smoking.

My sister saw the whole thing too. She has it on video from the roof of her apartment building. I couldn't reach her for 12 hours.

My niece was on a subway under the Trade Center, on her way to school in Brooklyn, 15 minutes before the plane hit...she is only 15. She saw, heard and smelled the whole thing. She was stranded at a classmate's home for two nights, not allowed to return to Manhattan and her parents by the National Guard. She was terrified. Phones were out. Cell phones were very congested. They weren't able to communicate.

A couple of our girls in our brownie and junior troops lost their mom and dad last year. Others had dads who were injured in the rescue.

So this year we will focus on what kindness, support, and tolerance mean, not only to each other as friends, but as a community. There are appropriate try-it's and badges that we will do.

Other than that, we'll just be together, with each other and our families and communities and our nation as a whole. I'm too overwhelmed personally by this anniversary to lesson plan it out...I just need to experience it. And survive it. Whole.
