Well said eco-mama and barb...I agree 100%. All packs go through ups and downs. Just hang in there. We have some very small packs in our district and I admire them so much. I know how hard the leaders and parents of the smaller packs work. They wear many hats. Cub Master, den leader, committee chairman, etc. After fall round-up each year I can have as many as 12 boys in my den. But in the end it always winds up being what I call my "fabulous five" that are loyal and wind up earning their rank. This year I have added another boy and his parents that are super interested so I think I will have the "spectacular six" that will earn their rank and advance. I give my parents a speech at the beginning of each year. I tell them they will get out of scouts what they put into it. I am a leader and I will lead them through the program. I will not drag them through it kicking and screaming!!!!

Keep up the good work and remember we are here if you need to vent. Just think, you have the opportunity to make a difference in these boys lives.

Kelly

I went to the hall to meet the Wolf scouts and their parents tonight and none of them showed. Big surprise there. I called all three but only got through to one. She was basically looking for a baby sitting service. I told her I didn't have a wolf den and if she still wanted her son in scouts, she would have to find another pack.
I'm still hoping that passing out flyers at the supermarket will workWish me luck!

Donna,
I know sometimes it feels like you are banging your head against the wall. How many do you have in your pack? Sorry I forgot what you said. Maybe consider combining with another pack, if there is one close enough. Also, ask your de (district executive) to help, or for them to have your "Unit Commissioner" help. They are to help Packs that are in trouble.

Good luck and I sure hope things improve, just give it some time. And be sure to make your council help. That is their job, unless I am wrong.

I have 8 scouts left over from last year, only 7 of them have been to meetings. All my new scouts appear to be gone. Of those 7, five are Webelos 2 and the rest are Webelos 1's.

Donna, I would definitely get your unit commissioner and de involved. Because at it stands come February of 2007 your pack is history. Not that you needed reminded of that.
I'll keep pondering it.

My son just joined as a Wolf this year and I'm his den leader. After much ado about some silly stuff, two dens merged into one and I lead it, along with another mom who's my assistant. We have six active boys who are really having fun, as am I! We have already participated in Pushmobile and are doing a Scouting for Food drive next weekend.

Alas, my career as a cubmaster is nearly done..

I lost the other Webelos 1 boy and now I have to move my son to another pack. It's funny when you get used to certain things you hate to see them go...

We did Scouting for Food pick up this weekend. He missed camping with his new pack this weekend because I made him fulfill his commitment to his original pack. Plus the other boys are still in my pack and they needed him. He's going to finish popcorn sales with his old pack. We had already bought the popcorn and his new pack isn't selling it. There are two other things he's going to do with his old pack and then that will be it. I'll miss the other boys. The parents will decide this week which pack they will move to. I'm hoping they follow me but it's up to them.

Wow. Thanks for these links! The first Pinewood Derby we attended was a disaster for our son! Some people I guess had access to more tools than we did and got really involved. We got the block painted and that was about it! Luckily some nice gents helped shave off enough of the wood to let it get in at the right weight! Oy!

We home school and we joined the home school Cub Scouts in our area. As a tiger I had to stay with my ds during scouts. When he was a wolf I helped the leader each week. As a bear I was co-leader. He was the only Webelos I in a Webelos II group so we did a lot of work at home to catch up. Then he was the only Webelos II in the Webelos I group. We did a lot of the material together.

My son is a Boy Scout now. I miss being involved with his scouting experience. I like knowing "he" has to keep up with his assignments now. He has become more responsible. I'm proud of him.

Pack success

I almost feel guilty about posting this, but then I thought, Hey, I used to be posting the 'help our pack is dwindling messages' too.

For the second year in a row, our pack has earned council recognition for recruitment. This year we also earned recognition for being so involved and visible in the community.

What's the secret?? It was NOT staying a secret! We had a great registration night, but every new boy had seen us at work over the summer and requested information or they knew a boy in our pack. We went to every back to school night in our community, handed out a lot of information as we do every year, but to no avail. Really, you have to be ready to recruit anytime the boys are in uniform.

This past summer, instead of planning one activity per month, we planned two, plus a community service project. That was a lot of work, but luckily we have a great Pack Committee and everyone divied up responsibilities. WE also planned activities like camp, day camp, parades, festivals, where we didn't have to do the planning and program. We just showed up and had fun.

We just had our Rocket Launch (it got great press coverage) and our Raingutter Regatta is this month. We send press releases out for every visible event!

I hope this helps and thanks for letting me toot my horn
