Where to buy used Boy Scout items?

Hello,

My 13 year old just joined Boy Scouts and is going on a camping trip next weekend. Needless to say, we don' t have any of the itmes he needs. Is there someplace that sells used items or one store better than another to buy these items?

Thanks.

Cindy

Cindy, I'm not sure what items you are listing. For used uniforms, try ebay. I don't think he would need those on a campout.
Are you a member of the local freecycle group in your area? You may be able to find someone who has this stuff and no longer needs it.
Your son's troop might also have a box of items that anyone could use--ask the scoutmaster.

For things like canteens, mess kits, sleeping bags, you can get those anywhere. Walmart is quite inexpensive for new supplies....you may be able to get them at thrift shops as well.

For non-uniform items, you do NOT have to have Official Boy Scout stuff. Sleeping bag, flashlight, things like that--use whatever you have or can get.

Hope this helps. What's on his pack list? If we know that we might be able to point you in the right direction.

See if the older kids would organize a uniform swap or "sale" of outgrown uniforms. It's a great project or fund raiser, helps with a leadership project and helps clean out the closet!

Used Sporting Goods Equipment

We have a chain store named Play it again! that sells used sporting goods equipment. Or if you have an Army/Navy store, good will, etc... try those. If not try Walmart/Target/K-mart for discounted items. Good Luck. Our scout troops do have hand-me-down uniforms. But have never thought about having equipment like tents/sleeping bags, canteens, etc... Thanks! Deidra

When I was a leader, the troop would have a day where all the older scouts would bring in the items they no longer use for sale. You might want to ask the troop leader so set this up. If not feasible, check with the troop leader and maybe he can make an annoucement at the next meeting. Also check with the local Scout office, generally there are more than one troop in the area. Maybe one of the others has things to sell or get rid of.
