Chicago Deep Dish Pizza

As posted in What’s for Dinner 08/06 by Cook4fun:

1 lb. loaf frozen bread dough, thawed
4 c. shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
1 lb. lean pork sausage, browned and drained
1 ½ tsp. oregano
2 - 3 cups spaghetti sauce
½ c. fresh sliced mushrooms
¼ c. parmesan cheese

Preheat oven to 500 degrees. Grease a 9 x 13-inch baking dish. Press dough into bottom and up the sides of pan. Sprinkle bottom of crust with 3 cups of mozzarella cheese. Crumble sausage over cheese. Top with oregano, spaghetti sauce, mushrooms, parmesan cheese and remaining mozzarella cheese. Place in 500 degree oven; immediately reduce heat to 400 degrees. Bake 30 – 40 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

Note: The original recipe called for 3 cans of plum tomatoes, chopped and drained, but my kids won’t eat tomatoes like that, so I used some spaghetti sauce. Turned out great!

We tried this today--tasted great!

It made so much pizza....next time I will make it in 2 pie pans instead of 1 9X13. I think it will be easier to serve in wedges.

Thanks, Cook4fun!

This sounds yummy--will definitely try it. I've never used bread dough as a pizza crust--does it cook through completely?

I didn't think the dough cooked QUITE enough, which is why next time I'll make it in 2 pie pans instead of one big casserole. I think that will make enough difference. Plus, that way I can customize flavors (1 pizza with vegetables, 1 with meatballs!) But it was fabulous pizza
