My Mom makes butter cookies from my grandmother's recipe every Christmas. Usually she leaves some plain, on some she puts a pecan halve and then she decorates some with the colored sugars and such. They are ALL good!!!

I don't have the recipe but I will e-mail my Mom and see if she will e-mail it back to me.

Butter Cookies

1 3/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp. baking powder
2/3 cup soft butter (NOT margarine)
1/2 cup sugar
1 egg, well beaten
1/2 tsp. vanilla (my Mom says that she always uses a full tsp.)

Preheat oven to 400 degrees.

Sift flour, measure & resift with baking powder.
Cream butter thoroughly, add sugar and
continue creaming until well mixed. Mix in well
beaten egg, add vanilla. Stir in sifted dry ingredients
in 2-3 portions until dough is smooth. Roll out 1/8"
thick on a floured board. Cut into desired shapes.
Bake on ungreased cookie sheet in 400 degree oven
for 6-8 minutes or until slightly brown.
Yield: 3-4 dozen.

**If decorating cookies, do so before baking.
