Does God Fit In My Box?

By Marilyn Ehle

"For the Lord your God is God of gods and Lord of lords, the great God, mighty and awesome..."(Deuteronomy 10:17)

After games and refreshments, the group of teens sat in a circle on the floor awaiting the devotional of the evening. When elbow jabs and giggles subsided, youth leader Tom brought out a beautifully wrapped shoebox and said, "Pass the box around the circle and let's see if we can decide what's inside. You can sniff it, shake it, turn it upside down, but you can't open it." This was a new approach to Bible discussion and the
young people eagerly began the process. " Stones," answered one girl.
"Marbles," commented a boy to her right. "Nope, it's something with wheels, like toy cars," said yet another.

The box made its way around the group amid various comments and laughter until it returned to Tom. At that point, he got to his feet, took the box to another room and returned empty handed. "OK, let's pick up where we left off last week. Any more ideas about the story of the Good Samaritan?" While they couldn't quite get the connection between this story and the box, they began the discussion. When after 15 minutes Tom had not returned to the subject of the box, the group began to squirm until finally someone asked in exasperation, "What about the BOX?!"

Feigning surprise, Tom asked, "What's the problem?" One of the girls responded, "Aren't we going to find out what's inside? What's the connection between the Good Samaritan and the box!"

At this Tom shared the real purpose of the evening. He explained that just as the group was uncomfortable with the mystery of the box, we frequently are uneasy when God doesn't act according to our expectations, or when He remains silent when we want Him to speak. We frequently become anxious in the presence of mystery, when our questions to and about God go unanswered. But do we truly want a predictable God? One who can be contained in a box?

~ Father, I admit to often being uncomfortable with Your wild and
wonderful nature. Help me not only trust You, but learn to praise You for Your magnificent mystery. Amen.

A Psalm of Thanksgiving
Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.
Serve the LORD with gladness: come before His presence with singing. Know ye that the LORD He is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves; we are His people, and the sheep of His pasture. Enter into
His gates with thanksgiving, and into His courts with raise: be thankful unto Him, and bless His Name.
For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations.
Psalm 100

May we Praise the Father for all things here at Thanksgiving, and then continue to praise HIS name with each day of our lives.
OUr Praises are sweet music to HIS ears, and HE given us so much, we should be able to give HIM Praises for what has been giving to us now on... even if we do not feel like praises HIm, for we are alive, and we have it better than some.
So start and give a praise here at this time of the yr.
