ages

My oldest DS (who will turn 4 on 11/7) started pre-school this year. I've been a SAHM since his birth. Since his bday is after the cut-off (09/05) he did not go to VPK this year. Not a big deal.

The class I originally signed him up for (3's) did not have enough children in it, so they put them in other classes. They put him in the "young 3's". I am okay with this b/c even though he is tall for his age & his language skills sometimes exceed that of some adults I know, his maturity level, sharing skills, & social skills are that really of a young 3yo.

When we met with our teachers on Parent's night, we were on the subject of ages thru the class and one mom got really angry that my son would be in this class. She thought he was "too old". The teachers & coordinator (who actually thought this class would be better for him anyways) stood up for him and reassured the other parents that the cirriculum(sp?) was appropriate for all of the children.

My son really loves pre-school. He goes 2x per week from 9a-noon. He sometimes gets out of the car so fast, he forgets to say goodbye. The room moms can't stop talking about how helpful he is when the other kids are sad for any reason, or how he adores the daughter of the mom who complained about his age in the 1st place (she's also a room mom).

My other DS (who will be 1 on 11/17, yes only 10 days after his big brother) is going to have this same scenario when he goes to school.

I was a little upset when this topic first came about, but have gotten over it and glad that not only did my DH & I stand our ground, but his teachers & coordinator did as well.

As I've found being a mum you can only make decisions with the information at hand and pray you are doing the right thing. If your child is happy where he is and learning mentally and socially I'd say you've made a good choice.
Don't let others pressure you if you are not certain.
My ds2 was always ahead of others in the class (pre and gr1) but an ex teacher friend of mine was pushing me to put him up a yr level, I said no he's not socially ready, he wasn't back then. I'm so glad I stuck to my guns and didn't listen to her.
