Writing Right??

  • I wonder if you ladies could help me with a question. My almost-3-year-old has been read-to almost every day of his life. Now he's really interested in words, and is trying to write letters.

Is there a right way and a wrong way to make alphabet letters? Is there a web site showing how to teach this? I'm concerned that I'll show him how to write something, and cause problems for him later when he goes to school, because he didn't learn to do it properly.
  • Here is a good site that you can use to print out worksheets. Ive used it with my son. http://www.tlsbooks.com/preschoolworksheets.htm You can do a search under "Kindergarten printing worksheets" or "kindergarten writing" and youll come up with a lot of other sites too. I also bought one of the wipe-off letter books so that he could practice that way too. That worked real well. WalMart has them and they are pretty cheap.

One thing I would suggest that you do is make a trip to the school--right now before school gets out for the year--and ask the kindergarten teacher if she would give you at least one worksheet or an idea of how they are printing.

I started printing worksheets off of the internet before my DS was in school and I ended up teaching him some wrongs ways to make some of the lower case letters. To this day, I think the way they are teaching him to make some of the letters is more difficult that they way that we learned how to do it. He has made it through though.

Congrats on your son being interested at such a young age! Keep up the good work!!
  • I'm not sure which school he'll be attending yet, but I'm going to check with a couple different schools nearby - Good idea. And the website is great! I've been looking for something like that. I found a few others, but they're not as good.

I'm sure once the weather here warms up and dries up so Ethan can get outside more, he'll lose interest in this. Right now I'm just trying to do what I can to keep him busy.
