Baby rabbits.

Just wanted to brag on dd (age 14) a minute. We have a mamma rabbit that gave birth this morning, the wind chill is about 20 below. She didn't pull fur for the nest, she didn't clean them up.
Dd had gone out to the rabbitry to water and check her. She brought in the babies, warmed them in warm water, had me fix a box with dryer lint. (We've never had to do this before mind you). Then she went out and got momma and put her over the top of them to see if they'd nurse. So far so good, they have latched on. We are hoping this kicks in momma's instinct to care for them.
Out of 6 babies, my dd saved three.
She is really something, my kid. I think I've mentioned somewhere on this forum before that she breeds and shows Satins through the American Rabbit Breeders Association.
She is in special ed and has a hard time in school so this is really something she can succeed at and feel good about. If she saves these three babies it will be the first time she's saved a litter like this.

Day two of Bunny Watch. I need to correct something from yesterday, she has in fact saved 4 of the babies from a litter of six. We are thinking of naming the 4th one Lazarus as we were sure he had died but alas, I kept hearing this squeaking in the kitchen and finally checked the towel she had wrapped him in and he was alive!
All are doing well. She continues to bring Mom in to nurse 3 times a day. We have not had to supplement at all yet. This is really a great thing. I hope to get some pics today to post.

Baby rabbits.

Congratulations on the new babies.
I think that is wonderful that you have
taken great care of them.
I am sure they will be great buddies to you too.

Bad news. We lost all four babies, we are not sure why unless the mother wasn't nursing them long enough. DD supplemented with forumla the last day and she thought one of them was going to make it, but he died. It was truly sad!
I was unable to post pictures. I have never had any luck posting pics.

Awwww You did what you could! It's not common for orphaned babies like that to make it, so don't feel too badly. We've had baby squirrel and bunnies when first born and none of them made it
