Question Parakeet advice

I "adopted" 7 parakeets a week ago. They are in a huge "rabbit hutch" type of cage. The guy that gave them to me made it. IT IS HUGE!! 49L X 29H X 25D just huge and ugly. SO...

My cousin and his gf gave me 2 parakeet cages and I found one at Meijer on clearance for $12.20 for the whole keet kit.

My question is, they have lived together for the last 5-6 months, does anyone know if it will be ok to split them up into 3 cages? (I will be getting rid of one so I will only have 6)

any input would be greatly appreciated...

Hi, It's been a while since you wrote about your parakeets and somehow I missed the post.
I run an small in home refuge for companion birds and small exotics.
I try to answer basic care and feeding questions concerning these pets.

Hi Robin

I separated the keets into 3 cages...2 in each and they seem to be doing fine.

I do have one that has a "deformed" beak. A friend said it is just too long and needs to be cut. I am not sure how to do this myself, and at the present time I don't think I could afford to take it in to be done. She said all you have to do is cut it off and then file it...??? kinda scares me. Any advice?

I'd have to disagree with your friend. You can cause severe damage and pain to your little bird by doing it wrong.
I would find a avian vet to do it. They usually don't charge but around $5.00 to $10 to do it. Or if you have a bird shop near you they also usually have trained people to do it. Breeders are another option.
See if someone who is expereinced in trimming beaks and nails is wiling to teach you. Many times they are just so they you can do it correctly and not harm your bird.
Tell me what kind of set up you have for them and their diets...
Basically I can tell you.... they need plenty of space to be able to flap their wings. They need a variety of toys/textures and different perches. The wooden dowels they provide with the cages are not really acceptable perches.
Seed alone is not adequate diet for any bird. Although keets eat a good amount of grass seeds they still need other things in their diet. I order Eucalyptus leaves from Aust. which they like and eat in the wild. It costs $10 including shipping.
I strongly recommend that you buy good quality seed and not the grocery store/discount store brands.
To have birds and keep them correctly does cost money but they are wonderful and deserve a quality of life.
Hope this helps. Please feel free to email me again.
Sincerely,
Robin
