Weaning Puppies

My dog pretty much weaned her puppies but did continue to feed them about every other day or so. Now she's filling up again. Is there anything that she can be given to dry the milk up? I was told it could cause an infection if it wasn't taken care of.

I would call your vet. Maybe he/she can give her a shot to dry up her milk just like they do humans.

It's worth a phone call to ask.......

I've never had a dog that had puppies.....at least not as an adult. The last time I had a dog that had puppies, I was 4 or 5 years old and can barely remember carrying the puppies around while the mamma dog watched me like a hawk!

Hi Abear93

Today has just been a major ordeal for me all around. Giving up those puppies has just torn me up and I've cried since noon today and now the mama dog is crying looking for her puppies. Guess the first time to give a puppy up is just harder for some than others huh.
I'm going to have her fixed. Have an appointment for it already but the vet just more or less avoided my question when I asked him about it and then I was told that the old milk could cause an infection. I think I just answered my own question....find a new vet.
Hope everything's going good for you and thanks for anwering my post.

While I've never had a dog to have puppies.......3 yrs ago we got the two DS an adorable puppy. She was 1/2 black Lab & 1/2 Beagle. Since she was black & white, the two DS named her Oreo. We had her barely two weeks when we determined that she was causing the two DS' asthma to act up! They spent 3 days in the hospital in side by side beds!

Anyway, the asthma doc said we had to get rid of her. The day we dropped her off to her new owners, it tore DD & myself up! I gave her new owners her food, toys and blanket in hopes to make the transition easier for her. DD & I cried during the entire 30 min drive home. I could barely drive! I cried for weeks over that puppy! Even though she "belonged" to the two DS, I was the one basically caring for her and I had just gotten her totally housebroken when we had to give her up.

Puppies and pets in general have a way of snatching a piece of your heart B/4 you know it!

Oh I hate to hear you had to give Oreo up. They do have a way of grabbing at our heart strings. The three little puppies I gave away today just had the most innocent faces and I lived and breathed puppies for six weeks. I was crying so hard on the three hour drive home that when I went through one small town I guess the highway patrol saw me and as I went through a light and he pulled me over and said he needed to check on my welfare. I started telling him the story and all I did was cry harder. The poor guy. He was so sweet and just kept telling me how I must have found them a really good home or I wouldn't have done it and he's right but ya know what, it didn't take the pain away. I feel like there's been a death as crazy as that sounds. Husband says I'm being silly about it now but I told him this is what people with hearts go through.
