Ear cleaning solution recipe?

My dog is a mutt, but loved dearly. She is a mixed breed. She has terrible ear wax. Does anyone have a recipe for a cleaning solution. I can get a small bottle from the vet, but it's like $10 for a small bottle.

A friends dog has allergies and needs her ears cleaned on a regular basis. They were spending a small fortune in cleaning solution, until a friend of hers who has a Therapy dog shared this recipe with me.

16 ounce bottle
8 ounces denatured rubbing alcohol
8 ounces listerine mouthwash (Original)

Mix these together to make an ear cleaning solution for your dog.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Ear Cleaning Maintenance and Healing
I have 2 concoctions for ears. The first one is for general maintenance.
Mix white vinegar and alcohol together 1:1. Pour in ear, squish around and wipe out. I use this once a week.
The second is for ears with lots of gunk in them. Mix mineral oil and Betadine Solution together. Use about 3 parts mineral oil to 1 part betadine solution. Shake well and put about 1.5ml in ear.
Squish well and wipe out. The gunk will float out. Betadine WILL stain.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

From notes of a neighbor:

Next, what I have done when one of mine has problems is to wash out the ear carefully with apple cider vinegar and alcohol in a 1/1 ratio. Then I apply (after the ear is dry) an ear oil of mullein oil and garlic oil to prevent bacteria and fungii to re-establish themselves. It works well. The ear oil can be bought in a health food store (or you can make your own, if you know your herbs).

Shawn-

Good advice on the ear cleaning, our Vet just told us this on Monday. He said vinegar and water half and half or peroxide and water half and half. This is our discount Vet, my regular Vet charged me 12.00 for ear cleaning solution
Oh this works for staph (sp?) infections, which my vet says once they get it it's always there, just do weekly maintenance and if it gets gooey use a little neoporin on a cotton ball.

Dry Skin

Is it all of her skin or just her ears? Do you bathe her alot? I just read recently instead of buying dog shampoo, use baby shampoo. have tried that on our dogs, worked just great and they smelled good. I'm not sure about dry skin, maybe mix baby oil and cheap vaseline and rub it over her entire coat. Thats what I use on myself, my feet get super dry in the winter. I'll look at some of my vet books and see what they say.

Karen -

Is she indoors or outdoors dog? We only bathe ours about once every 2 months, they are indoors dogs. they go outside and run and potty 2-3 times daily but for the most part they are inside. My regular Vet said you really don't need to bathe them at all unless they get really muddy/filthy.

We have 3:

Akita/German Shephard
Chihuahua/fox terrier
and the baby is:
long hair dachshund/beagle

Karen, how old is your C o c k er spaniel? Do you take her to the vet once a yr.?

I only bathe my dogs when they are extremely dirty or if they roll in some disgusting stuff. They might get a bath 2 times a year. I do brush them and I have a container that has a spray nozzle and I put half water and half Lubriderm, lotion...Keri lotion is good too, then I spray their coats, their coats are shiny and they smell good too.

What type of food do you feed? Maybe you can add a teaspoon of veg. oil to the food.

Take care,
