Guinea pigs

We are owned by 5 guinea pigs:
Snickers, Oreo, Kisses, Max, and Chip

Anyone else have guinea pigs?

I do!

We have two right now, but I want to get more. I've had guinea pigs since I was a child.

We have Ginger and Whitey right now, their pictures are in the article here http://www.thefamilycorner.com/cgi-b...mp.cgi?ID=4163

I just love them, they are so sweet!

Hey Samantha, you mentioned that your guinea pigs are expecting. Was that on accident or do you breed them?

I have always wanted to breed guinea pigs, but have never looked into it. I've had them for pets for years, and frankly I think they are the best small animal pet you can get for a child.

I was going through the checkout at the grocery store a week ago and the checker noticed the box of guinea pig food. Half joking she asked if I wanted anymore. I said sure. LOL She has two guinea pigs that her kids have outgrown and don't pay any attention to anymore. So I guess I'll be getting them too!

Hi Amanda!
First let me tell you that we keep all of our piggies in their own long rubbermaid-type boxes. We have an Abyssinian (Oreo) that makes liars out of all of the books that say "Guinea pigs cannot climb or jump out of their dwellings." He climbed *out* of his box and *into* Chip's box and then *out* of that one and *into* Max's box. He then calmly walked up to my husband as if to say "Will you put me back into my box as I'm too tired to climb back in?"
Kisses (a Silkie) is the mom to Chip and Max. She is an absolute sweetheart! She cannot seem to get enough love from us! Snickers (an Abyssinian) was our very first guinea pig. He thinks he's a cat, I guess, because he prefers to lie in our laps as a cat would. He's approximately 2 1/2 years old and had never been with a female. We were *mistakenly* led to believe that he's too old to become a father. He and Kisses have been "roommates" as *just friends* (we thought!!!!) for almost 6 months now. Unless Oreo (our escape artist) has figured out how to get out of his box with the lid, climb into the box with Kisses and Snickers, and then climb *back into* his own box,
putting the lid back on, HAHAHA, then Snickers is indeed about to become a father!

Amanda,
Do your two piggies live together or separately? When will you be getting your new ones? Let me know how they all turn out to like each other! Believe it or not, we only have two that *cannot* be on the floor at the same time.......and they are SISTERS! Go figure!

The two we have live together, they are sisters, we bought them when they were babies. The new ones that we are getting are females also, so we'll see how they get along!

Any guinea pig fans?

Are there any other guinea pig fans here? We have 2, a boy named Rodney and a girl named Missy. They have separate houses....no "dates" for them!

I have one. He's cute, but more than I bargained for. How long do they live? LOL Whoever said they can't jump out of boxes is incorrect. I place mine in a plastic container as I clean his cage and he gets out everytime. I love his squeals when he sees me.

I think that they can live between 5 and 7 years. I juts love them, they are such wonderful pets. They should be held often so that they are not afraid everytime you walk into the room.

My son's preschool class has two, one is quite tame, the other was never really held a lot (it was donated to the school) and you can tell. It runs to the other end of the cage whenever someone comes near it.

Just remember, guinea pigs needs extra vitamin C as their bodies do not produce it! Make sure they get leafy green vegetables and they also LOVE grass. Take him out in the yard and sit with him while he munches. He'll love it!

Here's an article if you are interested!

I think I read somewhere they can live as long as 10 years. We have one that's 4 or 5 years old. Not real sure since when we got her last year, her original owner couldn't remember. Doesn't surprise me since the poor thing was underfed and not well cared for. She's gained weight, and is now a healthy, sassy brat.

It's hilarious to watch her "hide" when we're traveling or have let her out of her cage for a run. While traveling, she'll stick her head into the play tube while the rest of her is out in plain view. When out for a run, she'll go under a bar stool and hunch there. She really believes we can't see her. One time we moved the stool, and she still ran to the spot and hid!!
