Vest-a-Dog

Has anyone ever heard of a program called Vest-a-Dog??

It is a national program that raises money to purchase bullet/stab proof vests for police dogs, just like the vests worn by human officers. Each vest costs approx. $800.00.

Our local school children are trying to raise enough money to buy 2 vests--$1600.00!! for our K-9 police officers.

Is there someone out there who has participated in this program?? If so-I would really like to hear what you did for fund raisers etc. We had a "wash-a-dog" day today--and the turnout was great-about 50 dogs in 4 hrs!!--despite the fact that it was gloomy and kinda chilly. We had asked for a $2.00 min. donation although most gave much more-up to $20.00!!!!! Even at $2.00 x 50 dogs--$100.00 at the very least!!!!!

If not-I would still love to get ideas for simple ways to raise the funds needed. Any money left over from our efforts will be donated to the local Sherriff Dept. K-9 unit for their dogs.

If you have a Vest-a-Dog program in your area--PLEASE make a donation. K-9 officers give their lives everyday to protect their human partners. They deserve a "fighting chance" too!!!!

Thanks---

Hi,
My dd2's middle school DARE club raised enough money last year to buy 4 vests with money left over to go to the Make-a Wish. They had a penny drive and a Bowl-A-Thon. They had friends and relatives pledge $ per pin they got down in three strings. They had alot of fun and the State Police brought one of the dogs wearing his new vest in to thank the kids.

WOW Laura!!

Those kids must have busted butt!!! GREAT JOB!!

Without me sounding really dumb--how do you do a penney drive--my DS#3 goes to pre-school at a different school and I was thinking of asking if the K-9 unit could come to his school and afterwards the students would bring in pennies, dimes, etc to put in a jar. Is that the general idea??

The K-9 officer is a beautiful black shepard--I think the kids would love him

Thanks for your ideas--and congrats again to the kids

The kids had a jar in each classroom and kept it there for a month. Once a week it was emptied into a large water cooler bottle. It's amazing how much change each class had every week.

Thanks Laura...that's what I thought it was.

Problem being....this isn't "my" project. Another woman is in charge and I offered several times to help her with it but....I'm not sure she was really receptive to me. I've got lots of ideas but I don't want to "step on her toes" and "steal her thunder" if you know what I mean- it's frustrating!!!

Oh well..........
